Best agent for service of process services in California

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

Every one of the 10 providers on this page sells registered agent service, which California law calls an agent for service of process, and most say they cover every state. Under Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.13, the agent must be an individual who is a resident of this state or a corporation that has complied with Section 1505, so a commercial service goes in the form's corporate box, where you enter only its name. Two recurring California obligations sit outside any agent's price: a Statement of Information due within 90 days of formation and then every two years, and the Franchise Tax Board's $800 annual LLC tax, which is larger than any agent price on this page. Because the state's change filing has no fee when filed between required filings to update the agent, the cost of switching later comes from a provider's renewal and exit terms, not from the state.1, 2, 3, 4

How is this list ordered, and what did we compare?

Providers are listed by our score, highest first, with tied scores in editorial order; for each we lined up the same published facts on price, renewal, document handling, cancellation and refunds.

The score itself comes only from cited, published facts: the Trustpilot rating, breadth of service and dashboard, and value and cost. You can see the method and every provider's breakdown on how we score. No service was tested for this page. Each Trustpilot rating appears next to our score as its own third-party figure, cited to Trustpilot and left unadjusted.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

For each provider we looked at the agent price, its renewal, how service of process reaches you, any separate business address product, and the steps to cancel. Every figure traces to a provider's own site or terms (or is flagged as provider-supplied) and carries a footnote into the Sources list. Where a provider publishes nothing on a point, the paragraph says so. If you want the background on what the role involves, read what an agent for service of process does; the rest of this page assumes you have decided to pay a service for a California LLC.

Which California rules change how you compare agent services?

Three rules shape the choice here: how the Articles record a corporate agent, the Statement of Information that also updates the agent, and the annual tax that no agent price includes.

A service is named by its corporate name only. The Articles of Organization offer two boxes for the agent. One is for an Individual (agent with California street address). The other is for a business, and the form's instruction reads "Only include the name of the registered agent Corporation." So when a commercial service is your agent, no street address is typed in that section at all. The statute also requires the LLC to keep an office in California, which need not be a place of its activity in this state. None of the provider facts we cite states the exact entity name a provider uses on California filings, so ask for it before you file. Who may serve and what the address rules are is covered on our California agent for service of process guide.1, 5

The Statement of Information is the filing that changes agents. For an LLC, the state's change-of-agent filing is the Statement of Information (Form LLC-12), which has no fee when filed between required filings to update the agent. The required statement is due within 90 days of formation, then every two years, for $20. When an agent service advertises annual report reminders or filing, the matching California filing is this statement. Ask whether a provider's feature actually files the Statement of Information or only sends a reminder.2, 4

The annual LLC tax is owed whoever your agent is. Every California LLC owes the $800 annual LLC tax, and the first payment is due by the 15th day of the 4th month after filing with the SOS. It goes to the Franchise Tax Board, not to the Secretary of State or the agent. Only one provider fact we cite mentions franchise tax reminders, and none says a provider pays the tax for you. The tax and the statement deadlines are laid out in staying compliant in California.3

Leaving a provider costs nothing at the state. Because the change filing has no fee when filed between required filings to update the agent, the price of changing agents is whatever your current provider's terms charge: a notice period you missed, a refund window that has closed, or a term you prepaid. Our walkthrough of how to change an agent for service of process covers the order of steps.4

How do the agent for service of process services compare in California?

The order below matches the table above, and each entry covers price, document delivery, leaving, and California's two recurring obligations.

Under each name you'll find what the provider charges, how papers reach you, how you leave, and what its features do about the Statement of Information and the annual tax. Refund terms are covered in each review.

Tailor Brands

The agent price, $199/year, and renewal, $199/year (renews at the same price), were supplied by Tailor Brands and aren't on a public page yet. For papers, it lists documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Under its agent terms, the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. A separate Virtual Address product, described as a professional business address, has no published price. The Essential formation package ($199/yr plus state fees) lists annual compliance (report filing and updates), so ask whether that means filing the Statement of Information for you. The Tailor Brands review has its refund terms.6, 7, 8, 9

ZenBusiness

The ZenBusiness agent costs $199/year on its own, and it offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC; after that it renews at $199/yr. You get a secure online dashboard with email notifications. Its agent page lists annual report reminders among what an agent passes on, without describing a separate alert feature. The service renews automatically, and leaving means calling, since you cancel by contacting customer support by phone. Formation packages don't include the agent; it is an add-on +$199/yr. See the ZenBusiness review.10, 11, 12, 13

LegalZoom

At LegalZoom the agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers), and the service renews at the purchase rate each year; rate subject to change. Its terms bar using the address publicly: "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." It sends email reminders of annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar. Cancelling works by phone or online via My Account, and proof of new RA may be required; for a California LLC, the filing that names a new agent is the Statement of Information. LegalZoom's state coverage isn't stated on the pages we checked. More in the LegalZoom review.14, 15

Bizee

Bizee's agent is $149/year when bought alone, with a free first year with any Bizee formation package and renewal at $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Lawsuit papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking, so a California owner gets a tracked physical copy. Bizee also advertises compliance notices, described as "Free lifetime compliance notifications". Cancelling with Bizee works by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, and in California that state step is the no-fee Statement of Information. See the Bizee review.16, 17, 18, 19

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings quotes $149 per quarter ($596/year). Its page says documents go to your account, with legal SOP typically available within 2-3 hours, and the agent includes notifications of state correspondence. Its FAQ describes the renewal in yearly terms, so check the billing cycle at checkout. Swyft's rule for leaving is that a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. In California that order costs nothing at the state, because the change filing has no fee. The Swyft Filings review has the details.20, 21

doola

doola advertises $297 per year on its agent page, which matches its Starter formation plan ($297/yr); the page doesn't say whether that price covers the agent alone. With formation the agent is free with Formation Service, for an unstated period. It offers same-day scans, while physical forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. For founders outside the US, agent services for non-resident founders compares the options. See the doola review.22, 23, 24

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest lists its agent at $125 per year. On the corporation page it mentions one year of registered agent service included with formation ($39 + state fees), but the LLC page says nothing about an included agent. Its separate mail product is Mail Forwarding $20/month (24 select states). Reminders are part of the agent (Deadline reminders included), and its annual report page tells agent customers "you'll automatically be enrolled in our renewal service," a service priced at $100 + state fees, charged at filing. You can cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee. Whether the agent itself auto-renews isn't stated. See the Northwest review.25, 26, 27, 28, 29

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, and that membership is billed separately each year (Plus $249/year, Pro $349/year). Add the two to compare it with providers that sell the agent alone. Cancellation is any time by phone, before renewal date, and the agent renews in successive 1-year terms, so the agent's renewal date is the one to watch. More in the Rocket Lawyer review.30, 31, 32

InCorp Services

InCorp's agent is $129/year, described as a $129 per year flat rate, while its terms allow the then-current fee. Legal papers are scanned and delivered same day. Among the agent features cited on this page, InCorp's is the only one that names the franchise tax: "Email reminders before deadlines (annual reports, franchise tax)." The service keeps running and is billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met, the conditions being to dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. With a formation order, the agent is sold separately at $129 per state per year. Read the InCorp review.33, 34, 35, 36

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance charges $99 first year (new customers), and the renewal is $159 annually. It advertises same-day document scanning. The term renews unless you give notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term. Because California charges nothing to change agents, missing that notice date, which commits you to another year, is the main cost of leaving. See the Harbor Compliance review.37, 38

What does an agent for service of process cost in California in year one and after?

In year one you pay the $70 filing fee, the Statement of Information due within 90 days of formation ($20), the agent's first-year price and the $800 annual LLC tax; from year two, the agent renewal and the tax recur every year and the statement every other year.2, 3

The annual tax is the largest of these. Every LLC doing business in or organized under California law owes it, and the first payment falls due by the 15th day of the 4th month after filing with the SOS. The Statement of Information adds $20 each time it is required, and a late one can bring a $250 penalty assessed by the Franchise Tax Board once the Secretary of State certifies the LLC for not filing.3, 39

The payments also land at different times in year one. The agent is paid when you sign up, the Articles fee when you file, the $20 statement by its first deadline, and the annual tax by the 15th day of the 4th month after filing with the SOS. A founder who budgets only for the filing fee and the agent can be surprised a few months later by the tax, which is larger than either of them.3

First-year and later-year agent prices often differ.

  1. ZenBusiness halves the first year for owners who form the LLC with it, then charges $199/yr.11
  2. Bizee includes the first year with formation and then renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee).18
  3. Harbor Compliance moves from $99 first year (new customers) to $159 annually.37
  4. LegalZoom charges $249/year (first-time registered agent customers), and the service renews at the purchase rate each year; rate subject to change.14
  5. Swyft Filings bills $149 per quarter ($596/year), so use the yearly figure when comparing.20
  6. Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, so the membership fee comes on top.30

Over several years, the renewal column counts for more than the first-year one. California agent for service of process services: common questions

Does a commercial agent's address appear on my California Articles?

No. When the agent is a business, the form says "Only include the name of the registered agent Corporation," so only the provider's name goes in that section. Your own addresses still reach the record through the Statement of Information, which asks for the LLC's principal office, mailing and California office addresses. Our page on what an agent for service of process can and can't keep off the record explains what stays public.4, 5

How much does California charge to switch agent services?

Nothing at the state level, because the Statement of Information (Form LLC-12) has no fee when filed between required filings to update the agent. Costs come from the old provider instead, such as Harbor Compliance's rule that notice come at least 90 days before the end of the current term, or a refund window that has closed. Some providers want the new agent on file first; Bizee's cancellation works by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change.4, 19, 38

Will my agent service pay the annual LLC tax for me?

None of the provider facts we cite says so. The $800 annual LLC tax is paid to the Franchise Tax Board, and the first payment is due by the 15th day of the 4th month after filing with the SOS. InCorp lists "Email reminders before deadlines (annual reports, franchise tax)", but a reminder is not a payment.3, 34

Does an agent service file my Statement of Information?

Some formation and compliance packages say they file annual reports, and in California the matching filing is the Statement of Information, due within 90 days of formation and then every two years. Ask the provider whether its feature files that statement or only reminds you. The annual reports explainer covers how these filings differ by state, and agents with compliance tools compares the features.2

What happens if my agent service resigns?

Under California law, the agent's authority ends on filing, and the SOS gives written notice to the LLC's principal office. The statute adds that the LLC must then file a new or amended Statement of Information, which is where the replacement is named. Read how to cancel an agent for service of process before you stop paying a provider yourself.40

How is the list on this page ordered?

Our score sets the order, from the top down, and a tie is settled editorially. Half of that score is the provider's Trustpilot rating and the rest comes from published, cited facts; how we score shows the method. Trustpilot reviews cover each company as a whole, not its California service in particular.
