Best LLC formation services in Alabama

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

An Alabama LLC starts with a name reservation, which the Secretary of State requires before you file, and then the Domestic Limited Liability Company (LLC) Certificate of Formation, which costs $200. Online, the state says you can file in the time it takes to type this request; by mail it wants paper copies and a return envelope. The LLC also needs a registered agent with an Alabama street office (Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.31), and after formation the Department of Revenue may expect privilege tax returns. A formation service prepares and files the same paperwork for a fee that varies by package, and the packages differ mainly in whether they include the agent, an EIN and an operating agreement.1, 2, 3

How do you form an LLC in Alabama, step by step?

You reserve the name, choose a registered agent, complete the Certificate of Formation, file it online or by mail, then get an EIN, sign an operating agreement and check your privilege tax obligations with the Department of Revenue.

The order counts in Alabama because the name reservation comes first, not as an optional extra.

  1. Reserve the name. The Secretary of State's LLC page is direct: "You must obtain a Certificate of Name Reservation" before filing formation documents. The fee is $25 by mail, or $28 online for non-subscribers. The state's LLC pages don't say how long a reservation lasts.4
  2. Choose a registered agent. The agent must be an Alabama resident or an entity registered to do business here, and the registered office must be located at a street address in this state where process may be personally served. You can serve yourself if you qualify. The Alabama registered agent guide covers who may serve and what the address rule excludes.3
  3. Fill in the Certificate of Formation. The form is the Domestic Limited Liability Company (LLC) Certificate of Formation. A service fills it in from your answers; filing yourself, you complete it directly.1
  4. Submit it. You can file online or by mail. For mail, the form says to "Mail 2 copies of this completed form along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope", and it will not be accepted via email.1
  5. Plan for timing. The Secretary of State doesn't publish a standard processing time or an expedite fee for LLC filings. For online filing, it says only that you can file in the time it takes to type this request.1
  6. Get an EIN. The IRS, not the state, issues this federal tax number, and banks usually ask for it before opening an account. Some packages below include it.
  7. Sign an operating agreement. It is the owners' own contract on shares, voting and what happens when someone leaves, and several packages include a template.
  8. Check the privilege tax. A new LLC may owe the Business Privilege Tax Initial Privilege Tax Return (Form BPT-IN), due within 2.5 months after the LLC organizes; it is not required if the tax is $100 or less. After that the yearly return is Form PPT, filed with the Department of Revenue. What Alabama LLCs owe after formation walks through both.5

What does an Alabama LLC cost with and without a service?

Whether you file alone or pay a service, the state's charges are identical, and every package below adds them on top of its own price.

Alabama Secretary of State, Business Services Division fees for LLCs
FilingFee
Form the LLC$200 sos.alabama.gov
Reserve a name$25 by mail ($28 online for non-subscribers) sos.alabama.gov
Change of registered agent$100 sos.alabama.gov
Register an out-of-state LLC$150 sos.alabama.gov

The reservation fee comes on top of $200, and it is not optional here. None of the package descriptions we cite mention Alabama's name reservation, so ask a provider whether it obtains the certificate for you and whether its price includes the state's reservation fee.

"Not listed" means the published package description doesn't mention the item, so ask before you order. First-year and second-year totals, agent renewals included, are worked out on the cheapest ways to form an Alabama LLC.

What does each provider's formation package include for Alabama?

Below, each provider's published formation terms appear in the order of the provider table: our score, highest first, ties in editorial order (how we score).

Trustpilot ratings sit in that table as a separate, cited number. Because the state describes online filing as quick, a provider's own handling time can be the slower part, so compare that figure as well as price. The agent services themselves are compared on registered agents for Alabama.

Tailor Brands

Lite, the cheapest package, is $0 plus state fees and processes the LLC within 14 business days. It comes with no annual compliance, operating agreement or branding tools. The next tier costs $199/yr plus state fees, cuts handling to within 1 business day and adds annual compliance (report filing and updates), operating agreement. Whether that compliance feature prepares Alabama's privilege tax return, which goes to Revenue rather than the Secretary of State, isn't stated. No package lists a registered agent; that service is $199/year. The two upper tiers bill every year, and the top one is $249/yr plus state fees.6, 7

ZenBusiness

Starter is $0 + state fees (does not renew), with handling of 7-10 days that excludes Secretary of State time. It bundles Worry-Free Compliance free for 1 year (then $199/yr), and the EIN and operating agreement are +$99 add-ons. Starter can add a Rush upgrade +$79, while Pro ($199 + state fees, renews at $199/yr) includes 1-day processing along with the EIN and an operating agreement template. No tier includes a registered agent; ZenBusiness offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC, after which it renews at $199/yr.9, 30

LegalZoom

The Basic package costs $0 + state filing fees and lists Articles of organization. Everything else is priced item by item: the EIN at $79, an operating agreement starts at $99, and agent service at $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). The middle package, $249 + state filing fees, adds attorney consultations with 30 days included, then $49/month auto-renew, so the monthly charge starts unless you cancel it.11, 12, 13, 14

Bizee

Basic is $0 + state fee and lists Registered Agent (1st year included). From the second year the agent costs $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Basic leaves out the EIN ($70) and the operating agreement (+$99). Standard, at $199 + state fee, adds EIN, operating agreement, faster processing (~2 weeks). So Basic's own handling takes longer than Standard's.15, 16, 31

Swyft Filings

Basic is $0 + state fees, and its listing says it processes in 7-10 business days, which is slower than the state's own online filing. Standard is listed as $169 + state fees (promotional, 'SAVE $30'; regular $199) and adds custom organizational minutes, custom banking resolution, business banking essentials, operating agreement, with handling cut to 3 business days. No package lists a registered agent; Swyft sells one at $149 per quarter ($596/year). Each package also starts a ComplianceGuard trial, listed as ComplianceGuard $199/year with a 14-day free trial then auto-charged, and Swyft doesn't say whether its annual report filing covers Alabama's Form PPT.17, 32, 33

doola

doola's Starter plan is $297/yr, a yearly charge, and includes LLC filing, EIN, US bank account guidance, US business address, registered agent. doola quotes 1-2 business days for its own filing step. Since the plan renews each year rather than once, its full price comes round again in the second year. Founders outside the U.S. can compare doola with others on agents for non-resident founders.18, 19

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest's formation service costs $39 + State Fees and adds a free domain name, open source website, phone line, business email, business address, brand protection. Only its corporation page mentions one year of registered agent service included with formation; the LLC page doesn't repeat it, so confirm before ordering. The agent alone is $125 per year. The EIN service is $50 (with SSN); $200 without SSN, and the operating agreement is listed as a free template.20, 21, 22, 23, 34

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer makes the first registration free with a Rocket Lawyer membership, and membership starts with a free 7-day trial, then billed yearly. Standard is $149/year, Plus $249/year and Pro $349/year. The agent costs $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, which rules out Standard. The EIN is $70 with Plus or Pro membership. No operating agreement is listed with formation.24, 25, 35, 36

InCorp

InCorp prices formation starting at $99 plus state fees, and its formation page lists no itemised documents, only live chat and phone support included. It sells the agent on its own (registered agent sold separately at $129 per state per year), and its EIN service costs $69. InCorp lists a $50.00 InCorp expedite fee for faster handling and says any state expedite fee is charged on top; Alabama's Secretary of State doesn't publish one for LLC filings.26, 27, 28, 37

Harbor Compliance

Harbor prices formation starting at $99 plus state fees and says it can prepare and file the government forms to create most LLCs in one business day. Its page names name check, articles, registered agent, EIN, operating agreement, but not which tier carries which item or for how long an included agent lasts. The standalone agent starts at $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. Its annual report service is $199 per state per year plus filing fees; ask whether that covers Form PPT before buying it for an Alabama LLC.29, 38, 39, 40

Should you file the Alabama certificate yourself or use a service?

Filing yourself costs the name reservation plus $200, and the state's online system is quick, so the main thing a service sells in Alabama is having someone else gather the details and complete the forms.2

If you live in Alabama, you can act as your own registered agent (Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.31) and skip that yearly charge. Your street address then appears in the agent field of public records, and someone has to be there to accept papers when a process server arrives. A commercial agent puts its own address in that field instead; that is true of every agent, not a feature of one provider.3

Some packages promise speed. With online filing available directly from the state, compare a provider's stated handling time against doing it yourself in one sitting. A package that quotes days or weeks of handling is slower than filing alone, even if it costs nothing up front.

Watch what renews. Bundled agent years, compliance trials and yearly-billed plans all turn into recurring charges. In Alabama, the yearly filing most LLCs think of as an "annual report" is a tax return to Revenue, due March 15 for calendar-year LLCs, and the state says tax due of $100 or less is fully exempt and no return is required. A compliance subscription aimed at Secretary of State reports may do little here unless it handles that return.5, 41

LLCs with several owners, outside money or a licensed profession may want a lawyer to draft the operating agreement rather than relying on a template. Definitions of the filing terms are in the glossary.

Questions about forming an LLC in Alabama

Do I have to reserve a name before forming an Alabama LLC?

Yes. The Secretary of State says "You must obtain a Certificate of Name Reservation" before you file formation documents. The fee is $25 by mail, or $28 online for non-subscribers. Ask any formation service whether its price includes this step.4

How long does it take to form an LLC in Alabama?

Online, the state says the Certificate can be filed in the time it takes to type this request. The Secretary of State doesn't publish a standard time for mailed filings or a paid expedite option for LLCs. A formation service adds its own handling time before it submits.1

Can I file the Alabama formation certificate by email?

No. The form says it will not be accepted via email. You can file online or by mail, and for mail the instructions are to "Mail 2 copies of this completed form along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope".1

Do formation packages include an Alabama registered agent?

Some do. Bizee's cheapest package lists Registered Agent (1st year included), and doola's Starter includes it without saying for how long; ZenBusiness sells it as an add-on +$199/yr. Registered agents for Alabama compared lists each provider's agent price and renewal.9, 15

What tax filings follow formation in Alabama?

A new LLC may owe the Business Privilege Tax Initial Privilege Tax Return (Form BPT-IN), due within 2.5 months after the LLC organizes, unless its tax is small enough to be exempt. After that, the yearly filing is the Alabama Business Privilege Tax Return and Annual Report for Pass Through Entities Only (Form PPT), filed with the Department of Revenue. See staying compliant in Alabama and annual reports explained.5

What does it cost to register an out-of-state LLC in Alabama?

An LLC formed elsewhere registers as a foreign entity for $150 instead of filing a Certificate of Formation. Its registered agent rules are covered on the Alabama registered agent guide.4
