Best registered agent services in Illinois

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

All 10 services on this page sell registered agent service, and an Illinois LLC can hire any of them as long as the agent has a registered office in the state. Under 805 ILCS 180/1-35, the LLC must continuously maintain in this State a registered agent and registered office, and the agent must be an individual resident of this State or any other person authorized to transact business in this State. The Illinois detail that changes the comparison is the yearly report: it costs $75, it lists the registered agent and office, and the dissolution statute covers an LLC that has failed to file its annual report and pay its fee as required by this Act, so a provider's report tools count here alongside its renewal price and its exit terms.1, 2, 3

How is this list ordered, and what did we compare?

Providers are listed by our score, highest first, with ties placed in our editorial order. We compared the same published facts for each one, then read them against Illinois's rules.

Our score uses only facts we can cite. Customer satisfaction carries the most weight, followed by breadth of service and the dashboard, then value and cost; the full method and each provider's breakdown sit on how we score. We don't buy or test these services. The Trustpilot rating in the table is a separate number from Trustpilot itself, shown as published.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

For each provider we looked at the agent price and what it renews at, how legal papers reach the owner, whether an annual report filing service is sold and at what price, how auto-renewal and cancellation work, and the refund window. A provider that leaves one of these off its pages is marked as not publishing it. If you want the basics of the role first, read what a registered agent does. Who may act as agent in Illinois, and how to be your own, is covered on the Illinois registered agent guide.

Which Illinois rules affect the choice of a service?

Three rules shape the choice: the agent needs an Illinois registered office kept up without a gap, the annual report repeats the agent's details each year, and a resigning agent can leave on fairly short notice.

The office has to stay in Illinois, without a gap. The statute's word is "continuously". A national service meets it with an office in the state; what you are buying is that office plus the handling of whatever is served there. The office address goes in the agent field of each annual report. That is the same for every commercial agent, so treat any "privacy" claim as describing that one field only. The other addresses on your filings stay as you give them.

The annual report names the agent again every year. The Illinois report asks for the LLC name, registered office address and registered agent, principal place of business, and names and business addresses of managers (or members with manager authority). So each year's report is a chance to confirm the agent and office are right, and a reminder or filing service from your agent is directly useful here. The fee is $75, plus a penalty if delinquent. A series LLC pays $50 more for each series with a designation in effect. Deadlines and late penalties are on staying compliant in Illinois.2, 4

An agent can step down, and the clock is short. A resigning agent mails notice at least 10 days before filing with the state, and the resignation takes effect no sooner than 30 days after filing. An LLC that has failed to appoint and maintain a registered agent in Illinois can be administratively dissolved under 805 ILCS 180/35-25. A lapse can also start on the owner's side, with a failed renewal payment, so the provider's renewal billing is worth reading.1, 3

Switching costs the state $25. You file a Statement of change of registered agent and/or registered office. With a fee that small, a provider's notice period or closed refund window can cost more than the state filing. How to change a registered agent gives the order of steps.2

How do the registered agent services compare for Illinois?

Each provider has its own heading below, in the order of the table above. Every paragraph sticks to what that provider publishes, plus what it means for an Illinois LLC that files a report each year.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands supplied its agent price, $199/year, and its renewal, $199/year (renews at the same price). It says it offers the service in all 50 states, and it lists documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. On Illinois's yearly report, Tailor Brands writes that the agent can file the annual report if instructed, while the filing service as a product sits in its Essential ($199/yr plus state fees) and Elite formation plans, billed yearly. Its terms carry an address rule worth reading: "You must not designate or otherwise refer to the Registered Address as your business location in any public materials." A separate Virtual Address product is sold for a business address, price not published. Its terms set auto-renewal on by default for subscription services, and fees are non-refundable, with a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. Full detail is in the Tailor Brands review.5, 6, 7, 8, 9

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness lists its agent at $199/year and renews it at $199/yr; it also lists 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Its agent page mentions annual report reminders. Filing the Illinois report is sold separately, either as Annual Report Filing $100 per report or bundled in Worry-Free Compliance $199/year; its listing doesn't say whether the state's own fee is included. Its terms send cancellations through customer support by phone, and money back is possible only if the service has not yet been used. Read the ZenBusiness review for the rest.10, 11, 12

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). The service auto-renews at the purchase rate each year until you cancel, and LegalZoom says the renewal rate can change. Its agent service lists "Email reminders about annual report deadlines through the Compliance Calendar" ahead of the Illinois report, and its report filing service costs $99 plus the state's fee, billed once. The agent terms add: "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." To leave, call or use the online account; LegalZoom may ask to see the new agent on record, so get the Illinois change filed first. See the LegalZoom review.13, 14

Bizee

Bizee sells the agent alone for $149/year, makes it free for the first year with any Bizee formation package, and lists renewal as $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Lawsuit papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking. It advertises "FREE lifetime compliance notifications" and says it handles annual report filings, with no standalone price stated for that service, so ask before relying on it for Illinois. Cancelling means assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change; orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. The Bizee review has the package detail.15, 16, 17, 18, 19

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills its agent at $149 per quarter ($596/year), the highest yearly agent cost on this list. Lawsuit papers are posted to the account typically within 2-3 hours. ComplianceGuard ($199/year) adds report filing: "Annual report filing is completed for your business each year (state fee applies)." To cancel, a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. With quarterly billing, an Illinois owner who switches mid-year should check which quarter has been paid. See the Swyft Filings review.20, 21, 22

doola

doola's agent page gives $297 per year, the same figure as its Starter plan, and it also says the agent is free with Formation Service, with the duration not stated. It sends annual report notifications and offers same-day scans. doola doesn't say on the pages we checked whether it serves Illinois specifically, so confirm coverage before ordering. Read the doola review.23, 24

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and says it has offices in every state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. One term affects every Illinois customer. Northwest says agent clients will "automatically be enrolled in our renewal service", a service that files the annual report for $100 + state fees, charged at filing. In Illinois that means Northwest's fee plus the state's $75 each year unless you opt out. You can cancel your Service anytime by logging onto your account, and Northwest says "There are no fees to cancel". Purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. See the Northwest review.25, 26, 27, 28, 29

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, so the yearly cost includes Plus ($249/year) or Pro ($349/year). Pro also adds report filing for $100, before state fees. The agent runs in successive 1-year terms, and cancellation is by phone before the renewal date. Its terms add that you must file change-of-agent paperwork with the state, so the Illinois change is the owner's filing. Read the Rocket Lawyer review.30, 31, 32, 33

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year and describes renewal as $129 per year flat rate (ToS: 'then current' fee). It tracks report deadlines with email reminders before anything comes due, and its report filing service is $89 + state fees, the lowest published report-filing fee among these providers. Its terms list three ways out (dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees), and one has to be met before the yearly fee falls due. See the InCorp review.34, 35, 36, 37

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance starts at $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. Annual report filing reminders come with the agent, and filing is sold at $199 per state per year plus filing fees. Leaving takes notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term; miss that date and another paid term begins. Because Illinois changes cost only $25, that notice date is the main cost of leaving Harbor. More in the Harbor Compliance review.38, 39, 40

What does a registered agent cost in Illinois, year one and later?

In year one you pay the state's $150 for the Articles plus the agent's first-year price. After that, each year brings the agent's renewal and the $75 report fee.2

Any report-filing fee is extra if a provider files for you. The report's due date isn't in the official sources this page cites, so confirm it with the Secretary of State.

The gap between first-year and renewal pricing shows up in a few ways here.

Three Illinois owners can end up with very different bills from the same list. One forms with a package that bundles the agent, files the report itself each year, and pays the state's $75 plus the agent's renewal once the bundled year ends. A second hands the report to the same company that acts as agent and pays that company's filing fee as well. A third lives in Illinois, acts as agent, and pays only the state. None of these is wrong; the difference is how much paperwork you want to keep.

The provider pages we checked don't say where in Illinois each company's registered office is, or whether a local office handles the papers. If that is a concern for you, ask before you sign up, and keep the answer with your records.

Illinois charges for the report every year. If you hand that filing to a provider, add its fee: LegalZoom lists $99 plus the state fee, InCorp $89 + state fees, and Northwest charges its fee by default for agent clients. Filing the report yourself avoids that charge. The full arithmetic is on the cheapest ways to form an Illinois LLC, and package detail is on Illinois LLC formation services compared. Agent prices nationwide are on cheapest registered agent services, and you can set two providers side by side on our comparison page.

Illinois registered agent services: common questions

Does my Illinois registered agent have to be in Illinois?

Yes. The statute requires the LLC to continuously maintain in this State a registered agent and registered office. The agent can be an individual resident of this State or any other person authorized to transact business in this State, which is how a national service qualifies. The Illinois registered agent guide covers serving as your own agent.1

Will a registered agent service file my Illinois annual report?

Some will, for an extra fee. LegalZoom lists $99 plus state fees, InCorp $89 + state fees and Harbor Compliance $199 per state per year plus filing fees, each on top of the state's $75. Northwest says agent clients will "automatically be enrolled in our renewal service", so check that setting if you plan to file yourself.14, 27, 36, 39

What happens if my agent resigns or I stop paying?

A resigning agent must mail you notice at least 10 days before filing, and the resignation takes effect no sooner than 30 days after filing. If no agent is in place, the LLC has failed to appoint and maintain a registered agent in Illinois, which is grounds for administrative dissolution, and reinstatement costs $200. Most services here renew automatically, so a lapse can start with a failed card or a cancellation. See how to cancel a registered agent.1, 2, 3

How much does it cost to switch registered agents in Illinois?

The state charges $25 for the statement of change. The provider's terms can cost more than that: Harbor Compliance needs notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, and Swyft Filings says a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. File the change with the state first, then cancel the old service.2, 22, 40

Can I use my agent's address as the business address on my Illinois filings?

Usually not for public use. Tailor Brands and LegalZoom both bar it in their agent terms, as quoted in their paragraphs above, and an Illinois annual report still asks for the principal place of business as its own item. The agent's address fills the agent field only, and a few providers sell a separate business address product. Our page on what a registered agent keeps off the record explains which details stay public.4

How is the list on this page ordered?

By our score, highest first, with ties in our editorial order. The score is built from cited facts only, and the largest share comes from each provider's Trustpilot rating, which covers the whole company rather than its Illinois work. For providers with deadline tools, see agents with compliance tools, and for the method, how we score.
