Best registered agent services in Maine

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

Each of the 10 services compared here sells registered agent service, and most say they cover all states. Maine's rule for the agent's location is short: the filing must give "An actual street address or rural route box number in this State," plus "A mailing address in this State, if different from the address under subsection 1" (5 M.R.S. § 104 and § 105). The rule that bears most on the choice is the yearly report. Every Maine LLC files an annual report due January 1 to June 1, and that report repeats the registered agent information, so the agent you pick shows up on a filing you make every year. Compare each service on three things: renewal price, what it charges to file or remind you about that report, and how hard it is to leave.1, 2, 3

How is this list ordered, and what did we compare?

Providers are listed by our score, highest first; where two scores are equal we use an editorial order that says nothing about which is better.

Our score uses only published facts that carry a citation. Trustpilot's rating makes up half. The other half looks at how many kinds of service a provider sells, whether it has a dashboard and scans mail, and what its packages include and what they cost once renewals start. We don't buy or test any service. The Trustpilot column below is reproduced as Trustpilot shows it, with its own source.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

For each provider we then pulled the same set of facts from its own pages or terms: the agent price and what it renews at, how legal papers reach you, whether a reminder or report-filing service exists and what it costs, auto-renewal, cancellation and refunds. Anything a provider is listed as having supplied is marked that way in Sources. If a provider doesn't publish a fact, the paragraph says so. For a plain explanation of the agent's job, read what a registered agent does; the rest of this page assumes you already need one for a Maine LLC.

Which Maine rules change how you compare agent services?

Four rules do: the in-state street address, the split between commercial and noncommercial agents, the annual report that repeats the agent's details, and a dissolution ground for failing to tell the state about an agent change.

A street address in Maine. The agent's filing must give "An actual street address or rural route box number in this State," and a separate Maine mailing address if mail goes elsewhere. A provider serving Maine needs a street address in the state to meet it. That address goes in the agent field, the same as for any agent you name; it does not replace the principal office address, or the member, manager or other authorized person, that the annual report asks for. The full address rules, and who may serve, are on the Maine registered agent guide.

Commercial or noncommercial agent. Maine's filing rules treat the two kinds of agent differently. For a commercial agent, the filing states "The name of the represented entity's commercial clerk or commercial registered agent." Without one, it states "The name and address of the entity's noncommercial clerk or noncommercial registered agent." So an agent registered with the state as commercial is named on your filing without its address being repeated. None of the provider pages we cite says whether that provider is a commercial registered agent in Maine, so ask before you write its details on your Certificate of Formation.

The annual report repeats the agent. Maine's Annual Report (Form MLLC-13) is due January 1 to June 1 and costs $85. It asks for the LLC name, registered agent information, principal office address, brief statement of the business, and name/address of at least one member, manager or other authorized person. A late report adds $50 in addition to the $85 report fee. That is why the report-filing and reminder terms in each paragraph below count for more in Maine than in a state with no yearly filing. Staying compliant in Maine covers the report itself.2, 3, 4

Telling the state is part of switching. A change of agent is filed on Form CLKRA-3 for $35. Maine's dissolution statute lists failing to notify the SOS of an agent change or resignation as its own ground for administrative dissolution, alongside having no agent at all, so the change goes on file before the old service is cancelled. The process is set out in how to change a registered agent.2, 5, 6

How do the registered agent services compare for a Maine LLC?

The paragraphs follow the table's order. Each one uses only that provider's published terms, with a note on how they meet Maine's yearly report.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands lists its agent service at $199/year and renewal at $199/year (renews at the same price), both supplied by the provider, and says it covers all 50 states. Papers arrive as documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. On the June report, its registered agent page (not its agent terms) mentions regular reminders and says the agent can file the annual report if instructed; the Essential formation package ($199/yr plus state fees) includes annual compliance (report filing and updates). One limit in its terms: the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. It sells a separate Virtual Address product for that use but doesn't publish its price. Its terms set auto-renewal on by default for subscription services, fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, and the terms list a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. Full details are in the Tailor Brands review.7, 8, 9, 10, 11

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness charges $199/year and renews at $199/yr. It has no free year, but its pages offer 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Its agent page lists state compliance notices and annual report reminders among what an agent passes on, without describing a separate alert feature. For the Maine report itself, it prices a single filing as Annual Report Filing $100 per report and a yearly plan as Worry-Free Compliance $199/year, with the state's $85 fee on top in either case. The agent renews automatically. You cancel by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. More in the ZenBusiness review.12, 13, 14

LegalZoom

LegalZoom charges $249/year (first-time registered agent customers); the service renews at the purchase rate each year, with the rate subject to change. Its agent service includes email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar, and a one-off annual report filing is $99 + state filing fees, so a Maine owner who wants the report handled pays that each year as well as the agent. You can cancel by phone or online via My Account, and proof of new RA may be required; in Maine that proof is a filed Form CLKRA-3. On refunds, its agent terms say prepaid fees for current term refunded only when LegalZoom terminates the service. LegalZoom doesn't state its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the LegalZoom review.15, 16, 17

Bizee

Bizee's agent service is $149/year, renewing at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), with a free first year with any Bizee formation package. Service of process is mailed via FedEx with tracking. It offers free lifetime compliance notifications, and it offers annual report filing with no standalone price stated, so ask what it would charge for the Maine report before relying on it. Its cancellation step is assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, which matches Maine's order: the new agent goes on file first. Orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. Bizee also sells a virtual address at $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. Read the Bizee review.18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills its agent at $149 per quarter ($596/year), and it auto-renews until cancelled. Its agent service lists notifications of state correspondence. Report filing sits in a separate plan, ComplianceGuard $199/year, which comes with a 14-day free trial then auto-charged, so an owner who doesn't want it has to cancel within the trial. A replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. Refunds are decided case-by-case by charge type and order status, with no published time window. See the Swyft Filings review.24, 25, 26, 27

doola

doola lists its agent at $297 per year, which is also the price of its Starter formation plan, and doola says "Registered Agent is free with doola’s Formation Service." It offers same-day scans and annual report notifications. Its terms say recurring fees auto-renew. Its cheapest plan doesn't file the report for you: Annual State Report Filing included in the Tax and Compliance and Business-in-a-Box™ plans (annual plans; state fees paid by customer). Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings. A refund is possible if application cancelled before it is sent to the state. doola doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.28, 29, 30

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and says it covers all 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. One term changes the Maine picture. Its pages say RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay, and that report service costs $100 + state fees, charged at filing. If you plan to file Maine's report yourself, check that enrolment at sign-up. Its pages don't say whether the agent service itself auto-renews. Its terms say you can cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee. Purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. Its mail product is Mail Forwarding $20/month (24 select states); the pages we cite don't say whether Maine is one of them. See the Northwest review.31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, so the yearly cost adds a membership: Plus at $249/year or Pro at $349/year. Annual report filing is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees, which means only Pro members can have the Maine report filed through it. The agent service renews for successive 1-year terms. You can cancel any time by phone, before renewal date, and refund requests are accepted within 30 days of purchase. See the Rocket Lawyer review.37, 38, 39, 40

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year and calls it a $129 per year flat rate, while its terms bill at the 'then current' fee. It sends email reminders before deadlines with the agent service and files reports for $89 + state fees. To stop the service you must dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees before the yearly fee is due. Refund requests are taken within 60 days of issuance of services. See the InCorp review.41, 42, 43, 44

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance charges $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. It advertises same-day document scanning, and its managed report service is $199 per state per year plus filing fees. Non-renewal notice must reach Harbor at least 90 days before the end of the current term, and its terms say "all Fees paid for the Services are non-refundable." It also sells a business address at $350/year per company, per location (limited time offer). See the Harbor Compliance review.45, 46, 47, 48

What does a registered agent cost a Maine LLC in the first year and after?

The first year is the $175 Certificate of Formation fee plus the agent's first-year price, with no report fee yet, because the first report is due the year after formation. From the second year, add the $85 report fee to the agent's renewal.2, 4, 49

Some first-year prices drop away at renewal, so read both columns.

A provider's report-filing fee is a third yearly line if you use it, and the state's $85 is charged on top of it. Going without an agent carries its own cost: it is a ground for administrative dissolution (31 M.R.S. §1591), and reinstatement is $150 per ground for dissolution. Whole formation budgets are in the cheapest ways to form a Maine LLC and Maine LLC formation services compared; agent-only prices nationwide are on cheapest registered agent services, and the comparison page puts any two providers side by side.4, 6

Maine registered agent services: common questions

Does a commercial registered agent in Maine change what goes on my filing?

Yes. Maine's rules say a filing gives "The name of the represented entity's commercial clerk or commercial registered agent," while a noncommercial agent's filing gives "The name and address of the entity's noncommercial clerk or noncommercial registered agent." So with a commercial agent, the filing names the agent without restating its address. Ask a provider whether it is on file with the state as a commercial agent in Maine before you complete your Certificate of Formation.1

Do I need an annual report service for a Maine LLC?

No, but you do need to file. Maine's report costs $85 and is due January 1 to June 1, and the LLC can file it without a service. A service files it for a fee on top of the state's, such as InCorp's $89 + state fees or ZenBusiness's Annual Report Filing $100 per report. Missing the deadline adds $50 in addition to the $85 report fee. See how annual reports work.2, 4, 12, 43

How much does it cost to switch registered agents in Maine?

The state's fee is $35 on Form CLKRA-3. Most of the risk sits in the old provider's terms: Harbor Compliance needs notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, and InCorp requires a cancellation condition before its yearly fee falls due. Filing the change before cancelling avoids a gap, because failing to notify the SOS of an agent change or resignation is a ground for dissolution in Maine. The guide to cancelling a registered agent has the steps.2, 5, 6, 47

What if my registered agent service resigns?

A Maine agent's resignation takes effect on the 31st day after the statement of resignation is filed or when you appoint a new agent, whichever comes first. The statute says the agent must promptly notify the entity in a record of the filing date. That window is the time to file a new appointment, because having no agent is a ground for administrative dissolution (31 M.R.S. §1591).6, 50

Can I give the agent's address as my business address in Maine?

Only if the provider's terms allow it, and at least two providers' terms don't. Tailor Brands' terms say the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials, and LegalZoom's agent terms say "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." The agent's address fills the agent field; your principal office is a separate entry. Several providers sell a separate address product, such as Bizee's at $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. See what an agent keeps off the public record.10, 15

Why does a provider with a lower price sit lower on the list?

The list follows our score, not price. Trustpilot's rating is half of it; the rest comes from the range of services, a dashboard, scanned mail and what packages include and cost through renewal, as how we score explains. Trustpilot reflects each company as a whole, not its Maine service, so check the renewal and report terms above against your own plans. Providers that file reports for you are grouped on agents with compliance tools.
