Best registered agent services in Montana

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

All 10 services compared here sell registered agent service, and any of them can be named on a Montana LLC's filings if it has a Montana location that meets the address rule in Mont. Code Ann. § 35-7-104: an actual street address or rural route box number in this state. Changing agents costs nothing at the Montana Secretary of State (No fee), and the annual report is $0 if filed January 1 to April 15 (fee waived). That shifts the comparison toward what each service charges to renew, how fast it passes on legal papers, and which compliance extras it bills for a report the state charges nothing to file on time.1, 2, 3

How is the list ordered, and which facts are compared?

Providers are ordered by our score, highest first, and ties are placed in editorial order. The score uses only published, cited facts, and the method behind it is set out on how we score.

We don't buy or test the services. Each Trustpilot rating in the table comes straight from Trustpilot and sits in its own column, though it makes up the largest part of our score.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

The provider paragraphs further down draw on the same kinds of published terms where a provider states them: the agent price and its renewal, how legal documents reach you, how the service renews and how you leave, and its refund rule. Missing terms are not filled in from elsewhere. For a plain-language account of the agent's job, read what a registered agent does. This page sticks to one decision: which commercial agent to name for a Montana LLC.

Which Montana rules shape the choice of agent?

Montana's rules touch the choice in a few places: the agent needs a qualifying in-state address, leaving an agent costs nothing at the state, and an on-time annual report has no state fee.

Who can be the agent

Montana's statute recognizes a commercial registered agent or a noncommercial registered agent. Whichever kind is named, the filing must show an actual street address or rural route box number in this state. A rural route box in Montana fits that wording; an address outside the state does not. The Montana registered agent guide covers who may serve and what the address rule allows in full.1

What goes on the public record

The agent's address is printed in the agent field of the LLC's record. That is true of every service on this page, so it is no reason to pick one over another. The annual report also asks for the business mailing address, registered agent, shares (if applicable) and principals of record, so a commercial agent replaces only the agent entry, not the mailing address or the principals you list. If you want a separate business or mailing address for those parts, some providers sell one, and what a registered agent can and can't keep off the record explains which.3

A free change of agent

The state's change filing, Registered Agent/Office Change by Entity, is a statement of change and costs nothing (No fee). With no state fee to weigh, a provider's notice period, refund window or cancellation steps become the main cost of switching. File the change first and cancel second. A Montana LLC that goes without an agent risks dissolution: the statute lists failing for 60 days to appoint and maintain a registered agent as a ground for it. The full process is in how to change a registered agent.2, 4, 5

How do the registered agent services compare for a Montana LLC?

Each provider appears in the order of the table above. The paragraphs quote its own published terms and point out where those terms meet a Montana rule.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands prices registered agent service at $199/year, with a renewal of $199/year (renews at the same price); the provider supplied both figures. It says it covers all 50 states, with documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Under its terms, the agent's address cannot be used as the business location in public materials, so the Montana agent address is not one to print on your website or letterhead. It lists a separate address product (Virtual Address product offered; price not published). Explanatory copy on its site says the agent can file the annual report if instructed, though its agent terms don't mention reminders. The Essential plan ($199/yr plus state fees) lists annual compliance (report filing and updates); with an on-time Montana report free at the state, what that covers is the task. The terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services. Fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, with a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. See the Tailor Brands review.6, 7, 8, 9, 10

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness lists agent service at $199/year, renewing at $199/yr. It offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. It sends scanned copies, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied, and lists mail and overnight delivery for urgent notices. Its separate annual report filing, at $100 per report, is worth weighing in Montana, where an on-time report has no state fee. You cancel by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. See the ZenBusiness review.11, 12, 13

LegalZoom

LegalZoom charges $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). It renews at the purchase rate each year, a rate subject to change. The agent page lists email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar. Its compliance filing subscription starts at $199/year, auto-renews; its page limits auto-filing to states that require a report and says auto-filing excludes Indiana, Maryland, Wyoming. Montana is not named among the exclusions. Refunds are narrow: under the agent terms, prepaid fees are returned only when LegalZoom ends the service (prepaid fees for current term refunded only when LegalZoom terminates the service). When you leave, proof of new RA may be required; a filed Montana statement of change, which costs nothing (No fee), shows the new agent. See the LegalZoom review.2, 14, 15, 16

Bizee

Bizee's agent is $149/year, then $149/year (ongoing annual fee), and it costs nothing in the first year with any Bizee formation package. Bizee says lawsuit papers (service of process) are mailed via FedEx with tracking. It lists free lifetime compliance notifications without saying which Montana deadlines they cover. You cancel by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, so the Montana statement of change is filed before you tell Bizee. Bizee publishes no refund rule specific to the agent; its general order terms say orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. See the Bizee review.17, 18, 19, 20

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills its agent by the quarter, at $149 per quarter ($596/year). That is the highest yearly agent figure on this page. Documents go to your account, and Swyft says lawsuit papers are available typically within 2-3 hours. Its page sets the order for leaving: a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. Swyft's annual report product, ComplianceGuard, costs $199/year, sold with a 14-day free trial then auto-charged. A Montana report filed in the window is $0 if filed January 1 to April 15 (fee waived), so an owner filing it alone would cancel before the trial ends to avoid the yearly charge. See the Swyft Filings review.3, 21, 22, 23

doola

doola's agent page quotes $297 per year, the same figure as its Starter formation plan ($297/yr), and says the agent is free with its formation service (RA free with Formation Service). It offers same-day scans, but physical mail forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. The agent service includes annual report notifications, though for filing, doola says Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings. It publishes no cancellation steps specific to the agent; its general terms let you delete the account or email support (Delete account any time, or email help@doola.com). doola doesn't publish which states it covers on the pages we checked. See the doola review.24, 25, 26, 27

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists offices in all 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. One term is easy to miss: registered agent customers are auto-enrolled in Compliance Services, billed through annual auto-pay, and its annual report service is $100 + state fees, charged at filing. Because a Montana report filed in the window is $0 if filed January 1 to April 15 (fee waived), that auto-enrolment is the part of the bill to check. You can cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee; purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. See the Northwest review.3, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, and the membership is its own yearly charge: Plus is $249/year, Pro $349/year. Annual report filing is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees. Add the membership to the agent price before comparing it with a standalone service. The service renews in successive 1-year terms, you can cancel at any time by phone, before renewal date, and refund requests must be made within 30 days of purchase. See the Rocket Lawyer review.33, 34, 35, 36

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year, renewing at $129 per year flat rate (ToS: 'then current' fee). It covers all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and legal documents are scanned and delivered same day. To stop paying, you must meet a listed condition before the yearly fee falls due: dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. Its annual report filing is $89 + state fees. Refund requests must be made within 60 days of issuance of services. See the InCorp review.37, 38, 39, 40

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance starts at $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. Its agent page lists same-day document scanning. Its notice period is the longest published on this page: you must give notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, or another term starts. Its managed annual report service is $199 per state per year plus filing fees. Its terms make all fees non-refundable. See the Harbor Compliance review.41, 42, 43

What does a Montana registered agent cost in the first year and after?

In the first year you pay the state $35 for the Articles of Organization plus the agent's first-year price. Later years cost the agent's renewal plus the annual report, which is $0 if filed January 1 to April 15 (fee waived) and $35 after April 15.2, 3

A few patterns show up when you set renewal beside the opening price.

Faster formation at the state is optional: 24-hour processing $20; 1-hour processing $100. An LLC already formed elsewhere pays $70 (Certificate of Authority) instead of the formation fee; the Montana registered agent guide covers registering an out-of-state LLC.2

The waiver on the annual report is an SOS policy and could change, so a late or future report may carry a fee. Montana registered agent services: common questions

Does Montana charge a fee to switch registered agents?

No. The Secretary of State's fee sheet lists no charge for the statement of change (No fee). The real cost of switching sits in the old provider's terms, such as Harbor Compliance's notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term. File the change naming the new agent first, then cancel the old service.2, 42

Do I need a paid annual report service for a Montana LLC?

Not for the state fee. The report is $0 if filed January 1 to April 15 (fee waived), so a service mainly saves you the task and the reminder. Provider filing fees, such as ZenBusiness's $100 per report, are charges of their own. Staying compliant in Montana covers the report and its deadline.3, 11

Can a rural route box be a Montana registered agent's address?

The statute allows it. Montana's wording is an actual street address or rural route box number in this state, and a P.O. box alone is not named as an option. Ask the Secretary of State if your own address is unusual.1

What happens if my Montana agent resigns?

A resignation takes effect on the 31st day after filing, or earlier when a new agent is appointed. Naming a replacement before then avoids a gap. Going without an agent long enough is a ground for dissolution (failing for 60 days to appoint and maintain a registered agent), and reinstatement costs $35 plus $35 for each year of delinquent annual reports. Read how to cancel a registered agent before you stop paying a service.2, 5, 44

Which services list compliance reminders for a Montana LLC?

Most of the 10 list reminders or alerts. Bizee lists free lifetime compliance notifications, LegalZoom sends email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar, and doola includes annual report notifications. For services that file the report for you, compare agents with compliance tools.14, 17, 24

How is this list ordered?

By our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. The score is built only from published, cited facts, and the largest share comes from each company's Trustpilot rating; how we score shows the method. Trustpilot rates each company as a whole rather than its Montana service, so compare the terms above for your own LLC. First-time owners may also want agents for first-time founders.
