Best registered agent services in South Dakota

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

All 10 services on this page sell registered agent service, and most publish that they cover every state; where a provider's pages are silent on coverage, its paragraph says so. Under SDCL § 59-11-6, a South Dakota LLC names a commercial registered agent, a noncommercial one, or the title of an office in the entity, and the address rule in SDCL 59-11-5 calls for an actual street address or rural route box number in this state. The South Dakota detail that shapes the choice is the yearly report: it is due by the 1st day of the anniversary month of the original filing, and SDCL 47-34A-809 makes an annual report not delivered within 60 days of its due date a ground for administrative dissolution, while a gap in agent coverage is not on that list. So a provider's report reminders and report filing price deserve as much attention as its agent fee.1, 2, 3

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

Our score uses only facts we can cite: Trustpilot ratings, the breadth of services and dashboard features, and package value and the cost of keeping a service past the first year. How we score shows the weighting and each provider's breakdown. We don't buy or try the services. The Trustpilot column is a separate figure that we cite and leave unchanged.

Where a provider doesn't publish a fact, the paragraph below says it doesn't publish it rather than filling the gap. Provider facts come from each company's own site or terms; two prices on this page were supplied directly by the provider and are labelled that way in the Sources list. For the agent's legal job in general, read what a registered agent does. This page covers only picking a paid agent for a South Dakota LLC.

Which South Dakota rules change how you compare agents?

Three rules shape the comparison: the agent needs an in-state street or rural route address, the annual report is the filing that can cost the LLC its good standing, and switching agents is cheap.

The address has to be in South Dakota. SDCL 59-11-5 asks for an actual street address or rural route box number in this state, plus a mailing address in this state, if different. A commercial service meets this with its own South Dakota address, and that address is what appears in the agent field. Hiring a service doesn't change the other names on the record. The annual report asks for names and addresses of the LLC's principal officers and directors (governors), so those details stay on file whoever your agent is. The South Dakota registered agent guide explains who may serve.1, 4

The statute treats commercial and noncommercial agents differently. If you name a friend, a relative or yourself instead of a service, the filing must give the name and address of the entity's noncommercial registered agent, which puts that person's South Dakota address on the record next to the LLC's name.1

The annual report carries the risk, so report help counts. SDCL 47-34A-809 lists the grounds for administrative dissolution, and one of them is an annual report not delivered within 60 days of its due date. A delinquent report also draws a $55 late fee once the report is 2 months past due. Most of the services below list deadline reminders. Several sell report filing as well, and a few fold it into a plan, so in South Dakota those features have a yearly job to do. The South Dakota compliance page covers the report itself, and agents with compliance tools lists the providers that file it or send reminders.3, 5

Changing agents costs little. The Statement of Change of Registered Office or Registered Agent or Both costs $10; it can also be filed online, and paper filing adds $15. With a state fee this low, a provider's notice period or refund window can cost more than the switch itself. How to change a registered agent lists the steps in order.6, 7

How do registered agent services compare for a South Dakota LLC?

Each heading below follows the table order. The paragraphs repeat only what the provider publishes and note where its terms meet a South Dakota rule.

Tailor Brands

Agent service at Tailor Brands is $199/year, renewing at $199/year (renews at the same price); Tailor Brands supplied both prices directly. Coverage is listed as all 50 states, and incoming papers are documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. One term limits the address: the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. Tailor Brands sells a separate Virtual Address product for a public-facing address but doesn't publish its price. For the South Dakota report, annual report filing is included in Essential and Elite (annual compliance report filing and updates); not in Lite. The middle plan, Essential, costs $199/yr plus state fees. Its terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services. Fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, with a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. Full terms are in the Tailor Brands review.8, 9, 10, 11, 12

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness asks $199/year for the agent and renews at $199/yr; and it offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Scans go to the dashboard, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied. It lists state compliance notices and annual report reminders, and a South Dakota report can be filed for you through its annual report filing service (Annual Report Filing $100 per report). Cancelling is done by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is available only if the service has not yet been used. See the ZenBusiness review.13, 14, 15

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers), and the service renews at the purchase rate each year; rate subject to change. It lists legal documents scanned and uploaded, with other mail uploaded to account and emailed. It sends email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar, and it sells a single report filing at $99 + state filing fees, bills once. The agent terms say prepaid fees for current term refunded only when LegalZoom terminates the service. When you leave, proof of new RA may be required; in South Dakota the filed statement of change is the state's record of a new agent. LegalZoom doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. More in the LegalZoom review.16, 17, 18

Bizee

Bizee charges $149/year, renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), and includes the agent free for the first year with any Bizee formation package. Lawsuit papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking. Bizee lists free lifetime compliance notifications, and it sells annual report filing with no standalone price stated, so ask for the price before the South Dakota deadline. You cancel by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change: file the South Dakota change first, then tell Bizee. Orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. See the Bizee review.19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings charges $149 per quarter ($596/year), so it bills by the quarter and the yearly figure is the one to compare. Papers go to an online dashboard, and Swyft gives this timing for lawsuit papers: legal SOP typically within 2-3 hours. To leave, a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. Its report product, ComplianceGuard $199/year, comes with a 14-day free trial then auto-charged; on a South Dakota LLC that product has a yearly report to file, so decide during the trial whether its price beats filing the report yourself online. See the Swyft Filings review.24, 25, 26

doola

doola lists $297 per year and says the agent is free with formation (RA free with Formation Service). It offers same-day scans; paper forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. The agent comes with annual report notifications, but doola notes that Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings, so on its cheapest plan the South Dakota report isn't filed for you. doola doesn't publish state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.27, 28, 29

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists offices in all 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Legal papers go to your online account, and it lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. Its report service is $100 + state fees, charged at filing, and Northwest says registered agent customers are auto-enrolled in it. Check that enrolment before your anniversary month so you know whether Northwest or you will file. Cancelling is done through the online account; no cancellation fee. Purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. Read the Northwest review.30, 31, 32, 33, 34

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent costs $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, and the membership is billed separately each year: Plus at $249/year, Pro at $349/year. Report filing is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees. Papers are scanned and uploaded to email and account. The agent renews for successive 1-year terms; cancellation is any time by phone, before renewal date, and refund requests must come within 30 days of purchase. See the Rocket Lawyer review.35, 36, 37, 38

InCorp Services

InCorp's agent costs $129/year and renews at $129 per year flat rate (ToS: 'then current' fee). It covers all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and papers are scanned and delivered same day. Its terms require one condition to be met before the yearly charge stops (dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees). Its report filing is $89 + state fees. Refund requests are accepted within 60 days of issuance of services, and its terms say discounted services nonrefundable. See the InCorp review.39, 40, 41, 42

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance charges $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. It advertises same-day document scanning. Notice to end the service must reach Harbor at least 90 days before the end of the current term, or another term begins; on a South Dakota change that costs $10, the notice date is the bigger cost to plan around. Managed report filing is $199 per state per year plus filing fees. Its refund term reads "No refunds; fees non-refundable." Read the Harbor Compliance review.43, 44, 45

What does a registered agent cost in South Dakota in the first year and after?

The first year costs the Articles fee of $150 online, $165 by paper plus the agent's first-year price; from the second year, add the agent renewal and the annual report fee of $55 online, $70 by paper.7

The first report falls due in the anniversary month of the filing, so it lands in the second year rather than the first. Filing online is the cheaper route for both the Articles ($150 online, $165 by paper) and the report ($55 online, $70 by paper).

First-year and renewal prices differ in a few ways worth checking.

Paying a provider to file the report adds its fee to the state's $55 online fee each year. A missed report adds the late fee once it is delinquent and, if the LLC is dissolved for it, reinstatement at $150 plus delinquent annual reports and fees, which also requires an approved Tax Clearance Certificate from the SD Department of Revenue. Formation totals are worked out in the cheapest ways to form a South Dakota LLC and South Dakota LLC formation services compared. For agent prices nationally, see cheapest registered agent services, or line two providers up on our comparison page.7

South Dakota registered agent services: common questions

Can a South Dakota LLC be dissolved for not having a registered agent?

Not under the dissolution statute as written. SDCL 47-34A-809 lists unpaid fees, taxes or penalties and an annual report not delivered within 60 days of its due date as the grounds. An LLC without an agent can still miss lawsuit papers and state notices, so a gap is risky even though it is not a listed ground.3

What happens if my South Dakota registered agent resigns?

The resignation takes effect on the earlier of the 31st day after filing or appointment of a new agent, and the agent must promptly notify the LLC of the filing date. Naming a new agent before that date keeps the LLC covered. The South Dakota guide explains the replacement filing.46

How much does it cost to switch registered agents in South Dakota?

The state charges $10 for the statement of change, and paper filing adds $15. The larger costs usually sit in the old provider's terms, such as Harbor Compliance's rule that notice arrive at least 90 days before the end of the current term or InCorp's rule that a condition be met before the yearly fee is due. File the change with the state before cancelling the old service.6, 7, 44

Is a provider's annual report service useful for a South Dakota LLC?

Yes, if you want someone else to file it. South Dakota requires a report every year, due by the 1st day of the anniversary month of the original filing, and the state fee is $55 online, $70 by paper. Provider prices for filing range from InCorp's $89 + state fees to Harbor Compliance's $199 per state per year plus filing fees, and Tailor Brands includes filing in its middle and top plans. Filing yourself online costs only the state fee.2, 7, 42, 45

Can I use my registered agent's address as my business address?

That depends on the provider's terms. Tailor Brands' terms say the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. Every agent's own address goes in the agent field; the report still lists names and addresses of the LLC's principal officers and directors (governors). For a separate address, Bizee sells a virtual address at $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. Our page on what a registered agent can and can't keep off the record explains what stays public.4, 10, 47

Why is this list in this order?

It follows our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. Our score uses only published, cited facts, and the largest share comes from each provider's Trustpilot rating, which covers each company as a whole rather than its South Dakota service. The method is on how we score.
