Best registered agent services in Virginia

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

The 10 services on this page all sell registered agent service, and Va. Code § 13.1-1015 requires every Virginia LLC to keep a registered office and a registered agent in the Commonwealth. Most of them list nationwide coverage; LegalZoom and doola don't publish a state list on the pages compared here. Two Virginia rules shape the choice. According to the State Corporation Commission's (SCC) fee page, the SCC mails the fee assessment to the registered agent two months before the due date, so the way a service passes on mail decides whether you see that bill in time. And the SCC lists the filing to change agents as "No fee," so the cost of leaving sits in each provider's own exit terms.1, 2, 3

How is this list ordered, and what did we compare?

Providers are listed by our score, highest first, and where two scores tie we use an editorial order that says nothing about which is better.

Our score uses only published facts that we cite: the provider's Trustpilot rating, the range of services and the dashboard, and price across the first year and the renewal that follows. How we score shows the weights and each provider's breakdown. We read each provider's own pages and terms; we don't buy or test the services. Trustpilot ratings appear in the table as a separate third-party figure, linked to Trustpilot and left unchanged.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

For every provider we pulled the same set of facts for a Virginia owner to compare: the price, what it renews at, how papers reach you, what reminders it sends, how auto-renewal works, the steps to cancel and the refund window. Where a provider doesn't publish one of these, the paragraph says so. The basics of the job are in what a registered agent does; this page sticks to picking a paid service for a Virginia LLC.

Which Virginia rules should shape your choice of agent?

The yearly fee notice goes to the agent, changing agents carries no state fee, and a resignation takes effect on a fixed schedule, after which an LLC that names no replacement can have its existence canceled.

The SCC bills through your agent. Virginia LLCs file no annual report. Instead they owe an annual registration fee of $50, due by the last day of the month your business was organized or registered. The SCC's fee page adds that the SCC mails the fee assessment to the registered agent two months before the due date. That puts the notice in your agent's hands first. A service that scans everything to a dashboard on arrival gets it to you quickly; one that forwards only legal papers, or holds ordinary mail, may not. Missing the date adds a $25 penalty for a late annual registration fee, and if the fee is still unpaid by the last day of the third month after the due date, the LLC's existence is canceled. The yearly cycle is covered in staying compliant in Virginia.2, 4

Changing agents is free at the state level. The SCC's fee table lists the Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent (Form LLC-1016) with "No fee". So the cost of leaving a provider comes from its own terms: a notice period, a closed refund window, or a rule that you name a new agent before it lets you go.3

A resignation starts a short clock. When an agent resigns, the resignation takes effect on the earlier of 12:01 a.m. on the 31st day after filing or when a statement of change appointing a new agent is filed, and the agent must mail a copy to the LLC's principal office. If the LLC is later sent a notice and still files no statement of change, its existence is automatically canceled. Reinstatement then costs $100 plus all unpaid annual registration fees and penalties. The Virginia registered agent guide explains who may act as agent and walks through a change.3, 5, 6

The statute describes the registered office as "A registered office that may be the same as any of its places of business," so an owner who acts as agent can use a place of business for it. Hiring a commercial agent replaces that office with the agent's.1

How do registered agent services compare for a Virginia LLC?

Each provider has its own heading below, in the same order as the table, with its published terms and how they play out under Virginia's rules.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands lists the agent at $199/year with renewal at $199/year (renews at the same price); both prices are supplied by the provider. It lists coverage of all 50 states, and its page describes documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard and an LLC dashboard with new-document notifications. The agent terms speak of scanning legal mail and don't say whether an SCC fee assessment is handled the same way. On reminders, its page says the agent can file the annual report if instructed; a Virginia LLC has no annual report, and the page doesn't say whether the agent would pay the registration fee instead. The terms add: "You must not designate or otherwise refer to the Registered Address as your business location in any public materials." A separate Virtual Address product, pitched as a professional business address, covers that need, and its price isn't published. The terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services. Fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, and when a refund is issued the terms charge a service fee of $29. Read the Tailor Brands review.7, 8, 9, 10

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness lists $199/year and renews at $199/yr; an LLC formed through it gets 50% off the first year ($99). Documents are scanned to a dashboard, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied, and its FAQ mentions "mail and overnight delivery to ensure you receive time-sensitive documents promptly." The page lists state compliance notices and annual report reminders among the agent's tasks. Leaving takes a call, since you cancel by contacting customer support by phone. Its terms allow a refund only if the service has not yet been used, and they set no time window. More in the ZenBusiness review.11, 12, 13

LegalZoom

LegalZoom lists $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). On renewal its page says: "The service auto-renews at the purchase rate each year until you cancel. The renewal rate is subject to change." Legal documents are scanned and uploaded, and for all other mail it says it will upload the documents to your account and email you, which would include a mailed SCC fee notice. It offers email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar; the page doesn't say whether that calendar tracks Virginia's registration fee date. When you cancel, proof of new RA may be required, so the Virginia statement of change comes first. Its agent terms promise a refund only when LegalZoom itself ends the service: "LegalZoom will refund you any prepaid fees specifically related to the current RA Service Term." See the LegalZoom review.14, 15

Bizee

Bizee sells the agent alone for $149/year, renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), and offers a free first year with any Bizee formation package. Lawsuit papers travel by courier: "All Service of Process (SOP) are mailed via FedEx with tracking." Its page says documents are promptly uploaded to your client portal, and it advertises free lifetime compliance notifications. Its cancellation route is assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change. Because Virginia charges nothing for the statement of change, that route costs only the time to file. Its general order terms say orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity, and no separate refund rule for the agent is published. The Bizee review has the rest.16, 17, 18, 19

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills the agent at $149 per quarter ($596/year), so the yearly figure is the one to set beside other providers' annual prices. Documents go to your account, and the page says legal papers are uploaded typically within 2-3 hours. It also lists notifications of state correspondence. Its terms say a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. Refunds are decided case by case, with no published time window. See the Swyft Filings review.20, 21, 22

doola

doola lists $297 per year, and its page doesn't make clear whether that figure is the agent alone or its Starter plan, which costs the same. It also says the agent is free with Formation Service, without saying for how long. It promises same-day scans, while physical forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. Its terms have no agent-specific cancellation process; they say "You may delete your account at any time, for any reason." Since Va. Code § 13.1-1015 has the LLC keep an agent continuously, the statement of change belongs on file with the SCC before the account closes. The doola review covers its plans.1, 23, 24

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists offices in all 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Legal documents go to your online account; for other mail, the page lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. Its annual report page says: "When you sign up for our registered agent services, you'll automatically be enrolled in our renewal service." That service costs $100 + state fees, charged at filing, and Northwest doesn't say what it would file for a Virginia LLC, which has no annual report. Cancelling is done in the online account, and the terms say "There are no fees to cancel." Purchases become non-refundable after 90 days. Details are in the Northwest review.25, 26, 27, 28

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer lists the agent at $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. The Standard membership, at $149/year (Standard; registered agent not included), doesn't qualify, so the yearly cost is the agent plus Plus ($249/year) or Pro ($349/year). Documents are scanned and uploaded to email and account. Service renews in successive 1-year terms, and you can cancel by phone before renewal date. Refund requests are due within 30 days of purchase. See the Rocket Lawyer review.29, 30, 31

InCorp Services

InCorp prices its agent at $129/year and describes renewal as "a flat $129 per year," though its terms allow the then-current fee. It covers all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and its dashboard is the Entity Management System (EMS), included free. Under its terms, service continues and is billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met. The listed conditions are to dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. For a Virginia LLC, appointing a new agent is the simplest of these, since the statement of change carries no SCC fee. Refund requests are due within 60 days of issuance of services. Read the InCorp review.32, 33, 34

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance lists $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. It advertises same-day document scanning. Its terms renew the service unless you give notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, and they state that "all Fees paid for the Services are non-refundable." Leaving costs nothing at the SCC, so that notice date is the main deadline to track. More in the Harbor Compliance review.35, 36

What does a registered agent cost in Virginia in the first year and after?

For a new LLC, the first year costs the SCC's $100 for the Articles of Organization plus the agent's first-year price. After that, the state's charge is the $50 annual registration fee, and the agent's renewal comes on top.4, 37

The gap between the first-year price and the renewal is where Virginia bills differ most. Bizee waives the first year with a formation package and then charges $149/year (ongoing annual fee), while ZenBusiness halves its first year for new LLCs before renewing at $199/yr. Harbor Compliance steps up to $159 annually after its discounted start. Rocket Lawyer's agent figure only makes sense once you add the membership it requires, which is billed separately every year. If a provider also bills a yearly compliance plan, Virginia's lack of an annual report means part of that plan may have nothing to do here; the registration fee still goes to the SCC either way.12, 17, 35

Owners planning to keep the LLC for years should read the renewal column first. Full totals with formation fees are on the cheapest ways to form a Virginia LLC, and formation packages are compared on Virginia LLC formation services. National agent prices are on cheapest registered agent services, and you can put two providers next to each other on our comparison page.

Virginia registered agent services: common questions

Does my registered agent receive the Virginia annual registration fee bill?

Yes. The SCC's fee page says the SCC mails the fee assessment to the registered agent two months before the due date, so the bill goes to the agent before it reaches you. A service whose dashboard or alerts pass that notice on helps, and keeping your own note of the due date guards against a missed scan and the $25 penalty for a late annual registration fee.2

How much does it cost to switch registered agents in Virginia?

Nothing in state fees. The SCC lists the statement of change as "No fee." Any cost comes from the old provider, for example Harbor Compliance's notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term or a refund window that has already closed.3, 36

What happens if my Virginia registered agent resigns?

The resignation takes effect on the earlier of 12:01 a.m. on the 31st day after filing or when a statement of change appointing a new agent is filed. The agent has to mail a copy to the LLC's principal office. If the LLC then ignores the SCC's notice and files no statement of change, its existence is automatically canceled, and reinstatement costs $100 plus all unpaid annual registration fees and penalties.3, 5, 6

Do I need an annual report service for a Virginia LLC?

Not for Virginia itself. Virginia LLCs file no annual report and instead pay the $50 registration fee to the SCC each year. Report-filing plans may still help if the LLC is registered in other states; annual reports explained covers those.4

Can I use the registered agent's address as my Virginia business address?

That depends on the provider's terms. Tailor Brands' terms say "You must not designate or otherwise refer to the Registered Address as your business location in any public materials," so its agent address isn't one to print as your business location. Some providers sell a separate address product, such as Bizee's virtual address at $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. What stays public on a filing is explained on registered agents and privacy.9, 38

Why is this list in this order?

It follows our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. The score is built only from cited, published facts, and the biggest part comes from each company's Trustpilot rating, which covers the whole company rather than its Virginia work. For providers that file state paperwork for you, see agents with compliance tools.
