Best LLC formation services in Colorado

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

A Colorado LLC is formed by filing Articles of Organization with the Colorado Secretary of State, and the fee is $50 (online only). The state's own wait is close to nothing, because your filing takes effect immediately after payment. A formation service files the same document and charges for its package on top of the state fee. In Colorado, then, the time a service takes to prepare and submit your filing is usually the whole wait, so compare handling times along with what each package includes.1, 2, 3

How do you form an LLC in Colorado, step by step?

You search the name, choose a registered agent, file the Articles online and pay, then get an EIN, sign an operating agreement and note your reporting month. The Articles step itself finishes the moment payment goes through.

  1. Check that the name you want is free. To hold a name before you file, a reservation costs $25 and lasts 120 days, and Colorado lets you extend it with a Statement of Renewal of Reservation of Name.4
  2. Choose the registered agent. Colorado allows an adult whose primary residence or usual place of business is in this state, and an entity in good standing with a Colorado place of business may serve as its own registered agent. Who qualifies and how the agent is named are covered in the Colorado registered agent guide.5
  3. Fill in the Articles of Organization on the Secretary of State's site. The state lists the form as Online only (no paper form), so even a service files it online for you.1
  4. Pick the effective date. The filing takes effect at payment unless a delayed effective date is chosen. A delayed date can help if you want the LLC to start at the beginning of a month or after a lease is signed.3
  5. Pay the filing fee, $50 (online only). Colorado's expedite fee, $150 additional for expedited paper filing, applies to paper filings, and the Articles have no paper route; online filings are effective immediately.2
  6. Get an EIN from the IRS. The Employer Identification Number is the LLC's federal tax ID, issued by the IRS rather than the state. Banks usually ask for it before opening a business account.
  7. Sign an operating agreement. It is an internal document between the owners that records who owns what and how decisions are made. Some packages include a template.
  8. Find the Periodic Report month. Each Colorado LLC files a Periodic Report for $25, and it can be filed two months before or two months after it without penalty. Staying compliant in Colorado covers that schedule.2, 6

An LLC formed in another state that wants to do business in Colorado registers instead with a Statement of Foreign Entity Authority, which costs $100.2

What does a Colorado LLC cost with and without a service?

The state charges the same fee whichever route you take, and every package below adds its own price to it.

Colorado Secretary of State fees for LLCs
FilingFee
Form the LLC$50 (online only) sos.state.co.us
Reserve a name$25 for 120 days (renewable) coloradosos.gov
Expedited processing$150 additional for expedited paper filing (fulfilled within 3 business days); online filings are effective immediately; no expedite for curing delinquency sos.state.co.us
Change of registered agent$10 sos.state.co.us
Recurring report$25 sos.state.co.us
Reinstatement after dissolution$100 Statement Curing Delinquency (for a delinquent LLC); $100 Articles of Reinstatement for a dissolved LLC sos.state.co.us
Register an out-of-state LLC$100 (Statement of Foreign Entity Authority) sos.state.co.us

Because Colorado's Articles take effect at payment, there is no state rush fee to add for an online filing, and the state notes that online filings are effective immediately. What does each formation package include for a Colorado LLC?

These paragraphs cover only published package terms, in the order of the provider table above: our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order.

The providers' agent services are compared on registered agent services for Colorado.

Tailor Brands

Lite costs $0 plus state fees and is processed within 14 business days, which in Colorado is far longer than the state's own step; its listing notes no annual compliance, operating agreement or branding tools. The next package, at $199/yr plus state fees, cuts handling to within 1 business day and adds, among other items, annual compliance (report filing and updates), operating agreement. The listing doesn't name states; Colorado's yearly filing is the Periodic Report. Elite costs $249/yr plus state fees, and like the middle plan it is priced per year rather than once. None of the three lists a registered agent, which Tailor Brands sells separately at $199/year.7, 8

ZenBusiness

Starter is $0 + state fees (does not renew), with handling of 7-10 days. ZenBusiness says its timing excludes Secretary of State time; in Colorado the Secretary of State adds little once the filing is paid. Starter includes Worry-Free Compliance free for 1 year (then $199/yr), a service that covers state-required annual report filings while it runs. On Starter the EIN and operating agreement cost extra. A faster Starter costs extra (Rush upgrade +$79 on Starter), while Pro ($199 + state fees, renews at $199/yr) offers 1-day processing and includes ongoing filing compliance (state-required annual report filings and up to 2 amendments per year). The agent is left out of every package, and ZenBusiness offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC.9, 23

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's Basic package is $0 + state filing fees and covers the Articles of organization. Most extras are sold one by one: the EIN at $79, an operating agreement that starts at $99, and the agent at $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). Pro, $249 + state filing fees, adds attorney calls, with 30 days included, then $49/month auto-renew. LegalZoom doesn't publish a handling time for Basic.10, 11, 24

Bizee

Bizee's Basic package is $0 + state fee and lists Registered Agent (1st year included); the agent then renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Standard, at $199 + state fee, adds EIN, operating agreement, faster processing (~2 weeks). Premium adds expedited filing (~4 business days). Colorado's own step is immediate once paid, so the state adds little to those timings. Bought on their own, the EIN costs $70 and the operating agreement $99.12, 25, 26

Swyft Filings

Basic, at $0 + state fees, covers the Articles and processes in 7-10 business days. Standard, $169 + state fees (promotional, 'SAVE $30'; regular $199), adds an operating agreement and banking paperwork and processes in 3 business days. No package lists a registered agent, which Swyft sells separately, on a quarterly bill, at $149 per quarter ($596/year). Every plan starts a free trial of ComplianceGuard $199/year (14-day free trial then auto-charged). That service files the yearly report, so it has a job in Colorado; an owner who plans to file alone would need to cancel within the trial.13, 27, 28

doola

doola's Starter is $297/yr, a yearly plan. It includes LLC filing, EIN, US bank account guidance, US business address, registered agent, and doola says it files within 1-2 business days. Because Colorado's side is immediate, that is close to the total wait. On compliance, doola's pricing grid shows that Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings, so the Periodic Report is yours to file on the Starter plan. Founders who live outside the U.S. can compare the providers that say they serve them on agents for non-resident founders.14, 15, 29

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest's package is $39 + State Fees and adds a free domain name, open source website, phone line, business email, business address, brand protection. Its corporation page quotes a formation price as a total that includes one year of registered agent service, but its LLC page doesn't say so; ask Northwest before ordering. On its own the agent is $125 per year. Northwest doesn't publish a handling time for the filing, which in Colorado is most of the wait.16, 17, 30

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer ties formation to a membership: First registration free with a Rocket Lawyer membership. Memberships bill yearly, with Standard at $149/year, Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year. The agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, so Standard members can't add it, and the EIN is $70 with Plus or Pro membership. No operating agreement is listed with formation.18, 31, 32, 33

InCorp

InCorp prices its formation service starting at $99 plus state fees; the listing notes Live chat and phone support included. The agent isn't included and is sold separately at $129 per state per year. InCorp offers its own expedite ($50.00 InCorp expedite fee), though for an online Colorado filing there is no state queue to jump.19, 20, 34

Harbor Compliance

Harbor's formation service is priced from $99 plus state fees, and its page lists Name check, articles, registered agent, EIN, operating agreement without saying which tier includes which item. Harbor says most LLCs are prepared and filed in one business day. The standalone agent is $99 first year (new customers), renewing at $159 annually, so ask how long an agent bundled with formation lasts.21, 22, 35

Should you file Colorado's Articles yourself or pay a service?

Filing yourself in Colorado costs $50 (online only), and your filing takes effect immediately after payment, so the main reasons to pay a service are the agent, the EIN and operating agreement, and help with later filings.2, 3

The Secretary of State's form is filled in online, so for many owners the paperwork a service saves may be modest. Speed points the same way. A service with a handling time of several days can be slower than filing yourself, since the state's part ends at payment. An owner who lives in Colorado can also act as registered agent and skip that fee, accepting that their address goes in the agent field of the public record.

A service starts to pay for itself in a few cases. One is an owner who lives outside Colorado and needs an agent anyway. Another is someone who wants the EIN and operating agreement handled together, or wants the yearly report filed for them; Colorado's report costs $25, and a late one carries a $50 late filing penalty. Check what renews before you buy: ZenBusiness's Starter, for example, includes Worry-Free Compliance free for 1 year (then $199/yr), and doola's Starter is a yearly plan. Owners with partners or investors may want a lawyer to review the operating agreement rather than rely on a template. The glossary defines the filing terms, and how to change a registered agent covers switching later.2, 9

Questions about forming an LLC in Colorado

How long does it take to form an LLC in Colorado?

If you file online yourself, Colorado says your filing takes effect immediately after payment. Through a service, add its handling time, for example 1-2 business days at doola or within 14 business days for Tailor Brands' Lite package.3, 7, 14

Can I mail paper Articles of Organization in Colorado?

No. The state lists the Articles as Online only (no paper form). A formation service also files them online on your behalf.1

Is it worth paying to expedite a Colorado LLC filing?

Usually not. The state's expedite fee, $150 additional for expedited paper filing, is for paper filings, and online Articles take effect at payment. A provider's rush upgrade, such as ZenBusiness's Starter rush upgrade (+$79), speeds up that provider's own preparation only.2, 9

Do I need to reserve an LLC name in Colorado?

Only if you aren't ready to file. A reservation costs $25 for 120 days and can be renewed. If you're ready to file, the reservation step can be skipped.4

Which Colorado formation packages include a registered agent?

Bizee's Basic package lists Registered Agent (1st year included), and doola's Starter includes the agent (duration not stated). ZenBusiness, InCorp and others sell it separately. Registered agent services for Colorado lists each price and renewal.12, 15

Does a Colorado LLC need a yearly filing after formation?

Yes. It files a Periodic Report for $25, and the report can be filed two months before or two months after it without penalty. Some packages file it for you; see staying compliant in Colorado and annual reports explained.2, 6
