For every provider we looked for the same things, starting with the plain question of what the agent costs and what it renews at. How do scanned papers and paper originals reach you? Can you cancel online, and is there a notice period? Is any money refundable? When a provider's pages are silent on a point, the paragraph says so. What in Hawaii's rules affects the choice of agent?

Three things do: the Hawaii business address the agent must keep, the annual report every Hawaii LLC files each year from the year after it is organized, and the low state fee for switching agents.

Who can be the agent

The statute allows an individual who resides in this State, or a domestic or foreign entity authorized to do business here, and in both cases the agent needs a business address in this State. A commercial service can serve under the entity option if it is a Hawaii entity or a foreign one authorized here. Its Hawaii address is what goes in the agent field of your Articles. The annual report and report-filing add-ons

Hawaii LLCs file an annual report (Form C5) by the last day of the calendar quarter in which the LLC was organized. No report is due in the year the LLC is organized. It costs $12.50 online; the state's LLC fee page lists the report at $15.00 without naming a method. A late report adds $10 per year delinquent.^{2, 3, 4}

Several agents sell report filing on top of the agent fee. Published prices include InCorp at $89 + state fees, ZenBusiness at $100 per report, Rocket Lawyer at $100 with Pro membership and Harbor Compliance at $199 per state per year plus filing fees. Each of those is a multiple of the state's online fee. What you pay for is someone tracking the quarter and filing on time, so weigh that against filing the short report yourself. The low cost of changing agents

A change of agent costs $25 on the Statement of Change of Registered Agent By Entity (Form X-7). With a state fee that small, a provider's notice period, renewal date or refund rule can cost more than the switch itself. How do the registered agent services compare for a Hawaii LLC?

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands prices its agent at $199/year and gives renewal as $199/year (renews at the same price); the provider supplied both figures. Coverage is listed as all 50 states, with documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Its explanatory copy says the agent can file the annual report if instructed, and its mid-tier formation plan, $199/yr plus state fees, lists annual compliance (report filing and updates), which would take in Hawaii's annual report. The terms say the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials; a separate Virtual Address product is offered, price not published. Its terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services, and fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, with a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. ZenBusiness

The agent is $199/year, renewing at $199/yr, and ZenBusiness offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Documents are scanned and uploaded to dashboard, and the terms say: "Originals will not be forwarded unless the material being sent cannot be copied." The service renews automatically. Cancelling is done by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. LegalZoom

LegalZoom charges $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). The service renews at the purchase rate each year, and the renewal rate is subject to change. For other mail, LegalZoom says it will upload the documents to your account and email you. It lists email reminders about annual report deadlines, a reminder rather than a filing. Its separate report filing is $99 + state filing fees, bills once. You cancel by phone or online via My Account, and proof of new RA may be required, so the Hawaii change form may need to be on file before you call. Bizee

Bizee lists $149/year, describes renewal as $149/year (ongoing annual fee), and gives a free first year with any Bizee formation package. It says it serves all 50 states. Service of process papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking, and the agent comes with free lifetime compliance notifications. Report filing is sold, with no standalone price stated. A business address product is $29/month. You leave by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, and its general order terms say orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity; it doesn't publish refund terms specific to the agent. Swyft Filings

Swyft lists $149 per quarter ($596/year), so compare it on its yearly figure. It names all 50 states and says legal papers are typically available within 2-3 hours. Its FAQ also says the service renews annually with reminders before renewal, which reads differently from the quarterly charge. A replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation, and refunds are handled case-by-case by charge type and order status. doola

doola's agent page shows $297 per year, and the agent comes free with doola's formation service (RA free with Formation Service), which is itself $297/yr. It offers same-day scans and annual report notifications. Paper forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. On filings, its plan terms say Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings, so the Hawaii report stays with you on that plan. doola says recurring fees auto-renew. Its general account terms cover leaving ("Delete account any time, or email help@doola.com") and don't describe a separate process for the agent. doola doesn't publish which states it covers. Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists offices in all 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Legal documents go to your online account, and normal business mail is scanned up to 5 docs per year free. One term is worth reading closely for Hawaii. Its terms note: RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay. Its report filing is $100 + state fees, charged at filing. Against a state fee of $12.50 online, that enrollment costs several times the state's charge, and the auto-pay terms say you must cancel at least one business day before next charge date. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. The memberships are yearly charges of their own: Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year, while Standard costs $149/year and doesn't include the agent. Report filing is $100 with Pro membership. The agent renews in successive 1-year terms; you can cancel any time by phone, before renewal date, and refunds must be requested within 30 days of purchase. InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year, advertised as a $129 per year flat rate, though its terms say renewals are billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met. It covers all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and legal documents are scanned and delivered same day. To stop billing you must dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. Refunds can be requested within 60 days of issuance of services. Its report filing is $89 + state fees. Harbor Compliance

Harbor charges $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. It lists same-day document scanning. Non-renewal notice is due at least 90 days before the end of the current term, otherwise another term starts; its terms make fees non-refundable. What does a registered agent cost in Hawaii in year one and after?

In the first year you pay the $50 Articles fee and the agent's first-year price. No report is due in the year the LLC is organized, so year one carries no report fee.^{4, 9}

From the year after formation, two costs recur: the agent's renewal and the annual report at $12.50 online. A report-filing add-on, if you buy one, sits on top of both.²

First-year price and renewal price often differ, and the gap takes different forms.

• Bizee's agent is free in the first year with formation, then $149/year (ongoing annual fee).²²
• ZenBusiness offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC, then charges $199/yr.¹⁶
• Harbor Compliance moves from its new-customer price to $159 annually.⁴⁷
• doola includes the agent in its Starter plan at $297/yr, so the plan price is what recurs.³³
• Rocket Lawyer's agent needs a Plus or Pro membership, such as Plus at $249/year, on top of the agent price.⁴²
