Best LLC formation services in Michigan

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

The state charges $50 to file the Articles of Organization (Form CSCL/CD-700), and that is the formation fee every new Michigan LLC pays; the other state fees below are optional or come later. You also need a resident agent at a Michigan address, and if speed counts, the state sells rush handling starting at 24-hour $50. A formation service submits the same form for you and charges its own package price on top; packages differ mostly in whether they bundle the agent, an EIN, an operating agreement and help with the yearly Annual Statement.1, 2, 3, 4

Michigan law uses the term resident agent. Most states call the same role a registered agent. What the term means in Michigan

How do you form an LLC in Michigan, step by step?

Pick a name the state will accept, line up a resident agent, file the Articles, decide whether to pay for speed, then get an EIN and write an operating agreement before the first statement falls due.

The order below puts the name check and the agent first, because the Articles ask for both and the filing fee isn't returned if the state rejects the form.

  1. Search the name. Look it up in the state's business records before filing. If you want to hold it while you prepare, a reservation costs $25 for six months. If you are ready to file now, you can skip it.5
  2. Choose a resident agent. Michigan's resident agent receives lawsuits and other legal papers for the LLC. Under MCL 450.4207, it can be an individual resident in this state whose business office or residence is identical with the registered office, or a qualifying company with an office at that address. Its office becomes the LLC's registered office. Who qualifies and how to act as your own agent are covered in the Michigan resident agent guide.6, 7
  3. Complete the Articles. The form is Articles of Organization (Form CSCL/CD-700). Besides the LLC's name, it asks for the resident agent and the address of the registered office. The filing fee is a $50.00 nonrefundable fee, so a rejected filing doesn't get it back.1, 2, 8
  4. Submit it. Michigan takes filings online, by mail or in person; the online route goes through the MiBusiness Registry Portal. With a formation service, the service submits it for you.2
  5. Decide on speed. The state doesn't publish a standard turnaround for regular filings, so ask before you set a deadline around it. Paid tiers are listed: 24-hour $50, same day $100, 2-hour $500 and 1-hour $1,000, each added to the filing fee.3
  6. Apply for an EIN. The IRS, not Michigan, issues this federal tax number, and banks normally want it before opening an account. You can apply directly with the IRS or buy it as part of a package.
  7. Write an operating agreement. It isn't among the state filings on this page, but it records who owns the LLC, how decisions are made and what happens when a member leaves. Templates come with some packages below.
  8. Mark the first Annual Statement. It is due February 15 each year, starting the year after formation, for $25. The state's own page adds that an LLC formed/qualified after September 30 skips the very next due date. What the statement contains and the penalties for missing it are on staying compliant in Michigan.1, 9

An LLC already formed in another state follows a different path: it registers here using an Application for Certificate of Authority, Form 760, for $50.10

"Not listed" means the package description we checked doesn't mention the item. Year-by-year totals, including agent renewals, are worked out on the cheapest ways to form a Michigan LLC.

What does each provider's formation package include in Michigan?

Each paragraph covers only what the provider publishes about its formation packages, in the provider table's order (our score, highest first; ties in editorial order). The agent services themselves are compared on Michigan resident agent services.

Tailor Brands

Lite, the entry package at $0 plus state fees, files the LLC within 14 business days, according to its pricing page. It leaves out the operating agreement and yearly compliance filing. Essential, at $199/yr plus state fees, promises processing within 1 business day and adds annual compliance (report filing and updates), operating agreement, so Essential and the higher Elite tier are the ones that cover filing the Michigan statement. Both bill every year. The agent isn't listed in any package and is sold separately at $199/year. Tailor Brands offers an EIN filing service but doesn't publish its price.11, 30

ZenBusiness

Starter costs $0 + state fees (does not renew), with handling in 7-10 days; ZenBusiness says that figure excludes Secretary of State time, so Michigan's own time comes after. Starter bundles Worry-Free Compliance free for 1 year (then $199/yr); check whether that free year runs past your first February statement. On Starter the EIN and operating agreement are +$99 add-ons. Faster handling is a Rush upgrade +$79 on Starter. The agent is outside every package. Pro ($199 + state fees, renews at $199/yr) adds faster handling, the EIN, a template agreement and ongoing report filing.12

LegalZoom

The free tier, $0 + state filing fees, covers the Articles of organization, so an EIN ($79) and an operating agreement (starts at $99) are bought separately. The middle tier, $249 + state filing fees, adds an operating agreement, an EIN and attorney consultations, with 30 days included, then $49/month auto-renew. A Michigan owner who wants only the filing and plans to handle the statement alone can stop at the free tier.14, 31, 32

Bizee

Bizee's Basic package, $0 + state fee, lists the agent: Registered Agent (1st year included). doola's entry plan lists it too, and Harbor Compliance lists it without naming a tier. After that year the agent costs $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Basic leaves out the EIN ($70) and the operating agreement (+$99). Standard, at $199 + state fee, adds the EIN, operating agreement, faster processing (~2 weeks), a timing Bizee doesn't relate to Michigan's own processing.16, 33, 34

Swyft Filings

Basic is $0 + state fees and prepares and files the Articles, with handling in 7-10 business days. Standard, on sale at $169 + state fees, adds organizational minutes, a banking resolution and an operating agreement. Every tier starts a ComplianceGuard trial that turns into a paid yearly plan unless cancelled, so note the end date. The agent isn't listed in any package and is billed by the quarter at $149 per quarter ($596/year).17, 35

doola

doola's Starter plan, $297/yr, is a yearly charge that bundles the filing, an EIN, a US address and the agent. It says filings go out in 1-2 business days. Annual report filing sits in its Tax and Compliance plan, $1,999/yr. doola says it works with a non-resident without a US SSN, which suits founders abroad; agent services for non-resident founders covers that case.19, 36

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest's package is $39 + State Fees and adds a free domain name, open source website, phone line, business email, business address. Northwest says formation includes a year of agent service, as stated on the corporation page; the LLC page doesn't repeat it, so confirm before ordering. Northwest gives away an operating agreement template; its EIN service is $50 (with SSN); $200 without SSN. Agent customers are enrolled in its report service at $100 + state fees, charged at filing.21, 22, 37, 38

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's formation offer reads: First registration free with a Rocket Lawyer membership. Membership is billed yearly: Standard $149/year, Plus $249/year. Standard leaves the agent out; it costs $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, which means paying for the higher membership as well as the agent fee. The EIN is $70 with Plus or Pro membership, and annual report filing is $100 with Pro membership. No operating agreement is listed with the package.23, 24, 39, 40, 41

InCorp

InCorp's single formation service is priced starting at $99 plus state fees, and its agent is sold separately at $129 per state per year. For speed it lists a $50.00 InCorp expedite fee (state expedite fee extra). The package isn't itemized beyond support, so ask whether an EIN or agreement is part of it.25, 26, 42

Harbor Compliance

Harbor prices formation starting at $99 plus state fees and says it handles name check, articles, registered agent, EIN, operating agreement, without saying which tier includes what or how long an included agent lasts. It can rush state processing in most states, price not published. The standalone agent is $99 first year (new customers), renewing at $159 annually.28, 43

Should you file Michigan's Articles yourself or use a service?

Filing on your own costs $50, plus any rush tier, and Michigan accepts the form online, by post or at its Lansing counter. A service saves you typing, not state fees.1

The Articles ask for the LLC's name, the resident agent and the registered office address, so a founder who has settled those has the main details ready. If you live in Michigan, you can name yourself as agent under MCL 450.4207 and avoid an agent fee, at the cost of putting your address on the Articles and each Annual Statement as the registered office.4, 6

A provider's own speed promise doesn't move the state's queue. Michigan's rush tiers, from 24-hour $50 upward, are paid to the state, so ask a provider whether its fast option includes that fee or only speeds up its own handling.3

The recurring costs are where packages differ most. Agent renewals, yearly plans and compliance trials keep billing after the LLC exists, while the state's fee for the yearly statement is $25. Founders with partners, investors or a licensed profession may want a lawyer to review the operating agreement instead of relying on a template. Filing terms are defined in the glossary.1

Questions about forming an LLC in Michigan

How fast can I form an LLC in Michigan?

Michigan doesn't publish a standard turnaround for regular filings. The state sells rush tiers from 24-hour $50 up to 1-hour $1,000, paid on top of the filing fee. A formation service may add its own handling time before the filing reaches the state.3

Can I file Michigan's Articles of Organization by mail?

Yes. The state accepts filings by mail or in person, as well as online through the MiBusiness Registry Portal. In-person filing is in Lansing.2

Do I need to reserve my Michigan LLC name first?

Only if you can't file soon. A reservation costs $25 for six months. If the name is free and you are ready, filing the Articles secures it directly.5

Which formation packages include a Michigan resident agent?

Bizee's Basic package lists Registered Agent (1st year included), doola's Starter includes it for an unstated period, and Harbor Compliance lists it without naming a tier. ZenBusiness sells it as an add-on +$199/yr, and InCorp sells it separately. Check the second-year price as well as the first; resident agent services for Michigan compares them.12, 16

Is the filing fee refunded if Michigan rejects my Articles?

No. The form describes a $50.00 nonrefundable fee. Checking the name and the agent's address before filing helps avoid paying twice.1

Is a package with annual report filing worth it in Michigan?

It depends on whether you want to handle a short yearly filing yourself. The Annual Statement costs $25 in state fees and lists the agent and registered office; published per-filing prices from providers start at $89 + state fees. See how annual reports work.1, 4, 27
