Best resident agent services in Rhode Island

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

All 10 services on this page sell registered agent service, which Rhode Island law calls a resident agent, and most of them say they cover every state. Under R.I. Gen. Laws § 7-16-11, the agent can be an individual who lives in Rhode Island or a business entity, either domestic or one authorized to do business here, so a national company qualifies once it is authorized to do business in Rhode Island. What separates them for a Rhode Island LLC is the yearly bill around the agent: the state's annual report ($50, filed February 1 to May 1 each year) and a $400 minimum annual tax come due every year whichever agent you pick, so compare renewal prices, report-filing add-ons and how easy each service is to leave.1, 2, 3

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

Our score uses only published, cited facts: the provider's Trustpilot rating, the range of services and dashboard features, and price and value. The method, with each provider's breakdown, is on how we score. Trustpilot reviews cover each company as a whole, not its Rhode Island work, and we show that rating unchanged beside our score. We don't buy or test the services.

For every provider we looked up the same items: the agent's first-year price and renewal, how legal papers reach you, what the provider sells for annual reports, auto-renewal, how to cancel, and refund terms. Where a provider doesn't publish one of these, the paragraph says so. For background on the role itself, read what a resident agent does.

What do Rhode Island's rules mean for picking a service?

Three rules shape the choice here: who may serve, how fast a missing agent becomes a problem, and a yearly report and tax that keep coming whoever your agent is.

The statute names two kinds of agent. One is "An individual resident of this state"; the other is a corporation, limited partnership or LLC that is either domestic or one authorized to do business in the state. Every filing must state the address of its resident agent, so the service's address goes in that field in place of yours. That is true of every agent, and it doesn't change the other addresses the state asks for. Some services sell a separate business address for those, which is covered below. The full rules on who can serve and what goes on the record are in the Rhode Island resident agent guide.1

The state gives an LLC little time without an agent. The Secretary of State may revoke the certificate of organization if the LLC fails for 30 days to appoint and maintain a resident agent, and Rhode Island uses revocation rather than administrative dissolution. When an agent resigns, the resignation is effective 30 days after filing unless a later time is specified. So a service that resigns over an unpaid renewal starts a short clock, and the notice terms below are worth reading before you sign up.1, 4

Moving to a new agent is cheap. The Statement of Change of Agent (Form 642) costs $20; a change to the agent's office address alone goes on Form 642A. With a filing fee that low, the real cost of switching is in the old provider's terms: a long notice period or a closed refund window. Our guide to changing a resident agent gives the order of steps.5

How do the resident agent services compare for Rhode Island?

The paragraphs follow the table order above, and each one uses only what that provider publishes on its own pages or supplied to us.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands prices its agent at $199/year and lists renewal as $199/year (renews at the same price), figures the company supplied to us directly. It says it covers all 50 states, and incoming documents are scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Its agent terms limit the address: the agent's address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. For an address you can show the public, it sells a Virtual Address product ("Keep your home address off public records with a professional business address") with no published price. Its terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services; fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, and any refund carries a $29 service fee. The Essential formation plan, $199/yr plus state fees, includes annual compliance (report filing and updates), which in Rhode Island has a real report to file each spring. See the Tailor Brands review.6, 7, 8, 9, 10

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness charges $199/year and renews at $199/yr; there is no free year, though it offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. It lists documents scanned and uploaded to dashboard, and its agent page says it also provides mail and overnight delivery to ensure you receive time-sensitive documents promptly. The service renews automatically, and its terms add: "ZenBusiness may increase its fees for RA Services effective the first day of a RA Service Term." You cancel by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. For the Rhode Island report, it sells Annual Report Filing $100 per report. On its formation plans the agent is an add-on +$199/yr. See the ZenBusiness review.11, 12, 13, 14

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers), and the service renews at the purchase rate each year; rate subject to change. Legal documents are scanned and uploaded, plus other mail uploaded to account and emailed. Its agent terms say: "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." It sends email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar, and sells one-time annual report filing at $99 + state filing fees, bills once. Cancelling is by phone or online, and proof of new RA may be required, so the state's change form comes first. The pages we checked don't state LegalZoom's state coverage. Read the LegalZoom review.15, 16, 17

Bizee

Bizee lists $149/year for the agent alone and renewal at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), with a free first year with any Bizee formation package. Service of process is mailed via FedEx with tracking, and the agent service includes free lifetime compliance notifications. Cancelling means assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, which for a Rhode Island LLC means the change form goes to the Secretary of State before Bizee hears from you. Bizee publishes no refund terms specific to the agent; its general order terms say orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. For a public-facing address, Bizee's virtual address is $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. See the Bizee review.18, 19, 20, 21, 22

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills its agent at $149 per quarter ($596/year), a quarterly charge, and it auto-renews until cancelled. Its page gives document timing as legal SOP typically within 2-3 hours. Swyft says a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before it cancels the service. Refunds are decided case by case, by charge type and order status, with no published time limit. Its report-filing subscription is ComplianceGuard $199/year. See the Swyft Filings review.23, 24, 25, 26

doola

doola's agent page quotes $297 per year, the same figure as its Starter plan ($297/yr), and the page doesn't say whether that buys the agent alone. The agent is free with Formation Service, for a period doola doesn't state. It offers same-day scans; physical forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. Its terms say recurring fees auto-renew, and the agent service includes annual report notifications. doola doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.27, 28, 29

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and says it has offices in 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Legal documents go to your online account, and it lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. One term affects every Rhode Island customer: Northwest says agent customers will "automatically be enrolled in our renewal service", which files the annual report for $100 + state fees, charged at filing. Its separate address product is Mail Forwarding $20/month (24 select states), and the pages we checked don't say whether Rhode Island is one of those states. You can cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee; purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. The auto-pay page we checked doesn't say the agent service itself auto-renews. See the Northwest review.30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. That membership is its own yearly charge (Plus $249/year, Pro $349/year), so add both when you compare. The agent renews for successive 1-year terms. You can cancel at any time by phone, before renewal date, and its terms say you must file change-of-agent paperwork with the state. Refund requests must come within 30 days of purchase. Annual report filing is $100 with Pro membership. See the Rocket Lawyer review.36, 37, 38, 39

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year and advertises a $129 per year flat rate, while its terms bill the "then current" fee. Legal documents are scanned and delivered same day, and customers get an Entity Management System (EMS), included free. To stop the service you must meet one condition: dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. Refunds must be requested within 60 days of issuance of services. Its annual report service is $89 + state fees. See the InCorp review.40, 41, 42, 43

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance charges $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. The agent service comes with annual report filing reminders. Its terms renew the service for another year unless you give notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term; a missed window means a renewal at $159 annually, more than the state's $20 change fee. Its terms say "all Fees paid for the Services are non-refundable." Managed annual reports cost $199 per state per year plus filing fees. See the Harbor Compliance review.44, 45, 46

Which best-for lists are relevant to a Rhode Island LLC?

Two of our lists line up with what Rhode Island asks of an LLC every year, and a third helps if you want your home address off public filings.

Because the report is due every spring, the agents with compliance tools list is ordered by whether a provider files the report for you, then reminders only. The cheapest resident agent services list sorts by published starting price with the renewal beside it, which suits an LLC that already budgets for the $400 minimum annual tax each year. If you want an address other than your home on public filings, the privacy list covers providers that sell a business address.

What does a resident agent cost in Rhode Island in year one and after?

Year one is the $150 filing fee plus the agent's first-year price, with the minimum tax owed every year; from the next calendar year the report fee joins the agent's renewal.47

The state says LLCs file the annual report "starting the calendar year after they register their business", on Form 632, for $50. The Division of Taxation's $400 minimum annual tax is owed even without business activity or profit. Neither depends on the agent you choose, so they set a floor under every provider's total.2, 3

What moves the total is the agent line, and first-year and renewal prices often differ.

Then add any report-filing service you would buy, since Rhode Island gives that feature a filing to do every year. The full formation arithmetic is in the cheapest ways to form a Rhode Island LLC, formation packages are compared in Rhode Island LLC formation services, and the yearly deadlines are on staying compliant in Rhode Island. Rhode Island resident agent services: common questions

Can a national company be my resident agent in Rhode Island?

Yes, if it qualifies under R.I. Gen. Laws § 7-16-11. The statute allows a corporation, limited partnership or LLC, either domestic or one authorized to do business in the state. The services on this page say they cover every state or don't publish their coverage; ask the provider for its Rhode Island address before you name it.1

What happens if my resident agent service stops?

An agent's resignation is effective 30 days after filing unless a later time is specified. If the LLC fails for 30 days to appoint and maintain a resident agent, the Secretary of State may revoke its certificate of organization. Name a replacement with the change form before you stop paying the old service; how to cancel a resident agent walks through the order.1, 4

Does a resident agent service file my Rhode Island annual report?

Not by default for most. Tailor Brands' Essential plan includes annual compliance (report filing and updates), and Northwest says agent customers will "automatically be enrolled in our renewal service". Others sell it separately, such as InCorp at $89 + state fees or LegalZoom at $99 + state filing fees, bills once. The report itself is $50, due February 1 to May 1 each year.2, 10, 16, 32, 43

How much does it cost to switch resident agents in Rhode Island?

The state charges $20 for the Statement of Change of Agent (Form 642). The old provider's terms can cost more than that, for example Harbor Compliance's notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term. Some providers also want proof first: LegalZoom says proof of new RA may be required.5, 17, 45

Can I use my resident agent's address as my business address?

That depends on the provider. Tailor Brands' terms say the agent's address cannot be used as the business location in public materials, and LegalZoom's say "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." For an address you can use publicly, several providers sell a separate product, such as Bizee's virtual address at $29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation. Whether that address fits a given field on a state form is a question for the Secretary of State.8, 15, 22

Does the resident agent fee cover the Rhode Island minimum tax?

No. The $400 minimum annual tax is paid to the Division of Taxation and is owed even without business activity or profit. Agent prices on this page cover the agent service only. The Rhode Island compliance page covers the tax and the report together.3
