Best agent for service of process services in Vermont

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

Every one of the 10 services on this page sells registered agent service, which Vermont law calls an agent for service of process, and most say they cover all states. Under 11 V.S.A. § 1655, the agent must be an individual resident of this State or a business organization that has a place of business in, and is authorized to conduct business in, this State, so a national service has to meet the second test, a place of business in Vermont plus authority to do business there. Two things set Vermont apart when you compare them. The state also asks the LLC for a separate designated office that can sit outside Vermont, and the $45 annual report is due within three months after the end of the LLC's fiscal year, so its timing follows your fiscal year, not a fixed calendar date.1, 2, 3

Vermont law uses the term agent for service of process. Most states call the same role a registered agent. What the term means in Vermont

How is this list ordered, and what was compared?

The table ranks providers by our score, highest first, with ties placed in our editorial order, and every provider was checked against the same published facts on price, renewal, mail, exit terms and report filing.

We build our score from cited facts only: the Trustpilot rating, the breadth of services and dashboard, and value and cost. How we score shows the method and each provider's breakdown. Nothing here was bought or tried out. Each Trustpilot rating is printed beside our score as a separate figure with its own citation, unchanged.

Because a Vermont LLC files a report every year, we added each provider's report-filing offer to the usual list of agent price, renewal, mail handling, separate address products, auto-renewal, cancellation and refunds. Figures come from the provider's own pages or terms, or are marked as supplied by the provider. A gap in a provider's published terms is reported as a gap. The agent's role in general is explained in what an agent for service of process does.

How do Vermont's rules change what to look for in a service?

Vermont's rules decide who can act as agent, split the agent's address from a second office the LLC keeps, and add a fiscal-year report, so the exit terms and report pricing deserve as much attention as the sticker price.

The agent and the designated office are two different things. The statute requires an LLC to keep an agent for service of process and, separately, a designated office for notification purposes. That office may but need not be a place of its business, and it may but need not be located in this State. A commercial agent's Vermont address fills the agent slot, as it would for any agent. The designated office is your choice, and owners outside Vermont can list an address where they actually receive mail. Ask a provider whether it will also act as your designated office if you want neither address to be your own; none of the provider facts we cite say so. Who may serve and how the office works are covered in the Vermont agent guide.1

The filing asks for an email. The statute asks for the agent's name, email, and address information. With a service, the provider's details go there, so anything sent to the agent reaches the provider first. That makes the provider's forwarding speed and alert setup worth checking.1

Leaving costs little at the state level. A change of agent goes on the Statement of Change for $35. If an agent resigns, it delivers a copy to the LLC, and the agency ends 30 days after the Secretary files it, or earlier when a new agent's designation takes effect. A provider's notice period or refund window can cost more than that state fee. The order of steps is in how to change an agent for service of process.1, 2

The report date depends on your fiscal year. Vermont's annual report costs $45 and is due within three months after the end of the LLC's fiscal year. An LLC whose fiscal year matches the calendar year files early in the year; one with a different year end files in a different season. A provider's reminder or filing service is only as good as the fiscal year it has on file, so give it the right one. Missed years add up at reinstatement, at $35 per year missed plus the overdue reports. Staying compliant in Vermont explains the report itself.2, 3

How do the agent services compare for a Vermont LLC?

Providers appear in the order of the table above. Each paragraph covers the agent price and renewal, how papers reach you, how to leave, and what the provider charges for Vermont's yearly report.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands sells its agent for $199/year and gives the renewal as $199/year (renews at the same price), both figures supplied by the provider. It says it serves all 50 states and lists documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Under its terms, the agent's address cannot be used as the business location in public materials; in Vermont you could put your own address in the designated office field and keep the agent address for service only. A Virtual Address product is sold separately, price not published. Its general terms put auto-renewal on by default for subscription services, fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, and any refund it does make loses a $29 service fee. On report filing, the Essential plan at $199/yr plus state fees lists annual compliance (report filing and updates), while Lite has no annual compliance. See the Tailor Brands review.4, 5, 6, 7, 8

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness prices the agent at $199/year with renewal at $199/yr, and its agent page offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Papers arrive through a secure online dashboard with email notifications, and its terms send scans, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied. The service renews automatically. You cancel by contacting customer support by phone, and its terms allow a refund only if the service has not yet been used. For the Vermont report you can pay Annual Report Filing $100 per report or take Worry-Free Compliance $199/year; if your LLC files one report a year and nothing else, the per-report price is the simpler comparison. See the ZenBusiness review.9, 10, 11

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's agent costs $249/year (first-time registered agent customers) and auto-renews at the purchase rate each year until you cancel, with the rate subject to change. It offers legal documents scanned and uploaded, along with email reminders about annual report deadlines. Its agent terms limit the address: "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." Cancelling works by phone or online via My Account, and proof of new RA may be required, so get the Statement of Change on file with the Secretary of State before you call. Report help comes as a single filing at $99 + state filing fees, bills once, or a subscription that starts at $199/year, auto-renews. More in the LegalZoom review.12, 13, 14, 15

Bizee

Bizee lists the agent at $149/year, renewing at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), with a free first year with any Bizee formation package. Legal papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking, and its agent page lists free lifetime compliance notifications. It sells report filing, but with no standalone price stated, so ask for the Vermont price before relying on it. Its terms say services may automatically renew. The exit it describes is assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, which in Vermont means the state's change filing comes first. Orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government office. See the Bizee review.16, 17, 18, 19, 20

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings charges $149 per quarter ($596/year), a quarterly bill rather than a yearly one. For lawsuit papers, its page says legal SOP typically available within 2-3 hours. Its FAQ describes a service that renews annually with reminders before renewal, which doesn't line up with quarterly billing, so check the cycle before paying. A replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation, and refunds are handled case-by-case by charge type and order status. The report service is ComplianceGuard $199/year, and the formation trial runs as a 14-day free trial then auto-charged. A Vermont LLC has a real report each year for that service to file, so weigh its price against filing the report yourself. See the Swyft Filings review.21, 22, 23, 24, 25

doola

doola's agent page shows $297 per year, matching its Starter formation plan, and calls the agent free with Formation Service. It lists same-day scans; physical forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. You get annual report notifications, though Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings, so on that plan the Vermont report is still yours to file. A refund may be possible if application cancelled before it is sent to the state. doola doesn't state its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.26, 27, 28

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists coverage of every state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Its corporation page mentions one year of registered agent service included with formation ($39 + state fees), a claim its LLC page doesn't repeat. It lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. Watch one term in Vermont: its terms describe RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay, and the report service is $100 + state fees, charged at filing. Unless you opt out, the yearly bill can include that charge on top of the state's $45. You can cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee, and purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. See the Northwest review.29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. The membership is its own yearly charge, Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year, so add the two together when comparing. Documents are scanned and uploaded to email and account, and service runs in successive 1-year terms. You can cancel any time by phone, before renewal date; refund requests must arrive within 30 days of purchase. Report filing is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees, so a Plus member in Vermont files the report without that service. Read the Rocket Lawyer review.35, 36, 37, 38

InCorp Services

InCorp lists $129/year and calls the renewal a $129 per year flat rate, though its terms say service is billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met. Legal documents are scanned and delivered same day, and it sends email reminders before deadlines. Report filing is $89 + state fees. The ways out are to dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees, and one of them has to happen before the yearly fee falls due. Refund requests are accepted within 60 days of issuance of services. Read the InCorp review.39, 40, 41, 42

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance starts at $99 first year (new customers) and renews at $159 annually. It advertises same-day document scanning and includes annual report filing reminders. Its managed report service costs $199 per state per year plus filing fees. The agent renews unless notice of non-renewal arrives at least 90 days before the end of the current term, so that deadline comes well before the renewal date itself. More in the Harbor Compliance review.43, 44, 45

What does an agent cost a Vermont LLC in year one and after?

Year one is the $155 Articles fee plus the agent's first-year price. After that, each year brings the $45 report fee, the agent renewal and, if you use one, a provider's report-filing charge.2

The Secretary of State calls online filing the preferred method and lists no extra fee for it, so the online route adds nothing to the state fee. A Vermont resident who acts as the LLC's agent under 11 V.S.A. § 1655 pays no agent fee, but that person's name, email, and address information goes on the filing.1, 46

The renewal column shapes the cost over several years more than the entry price does. A few of the published terms differ in how the first year compares with later ones.

  1. Bizee's agent year is free with a Bizee formation, then renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee).17
  2. ZenBusiness halves the first year for a new LLC and then charges $199/yr.10
  3. Harbor Compliance goes from $99 first year (new customers) to $159 annually.43
  4. Swyft Filings bills each quarter, so multiply before you compare.
  5. Rocket Lawyer adds a Plus or Pro membership to the agent price.

For a full yearly figure, add the state's $45 report fee and any report service you choose. The whole formation bill is worked out on the cheapest ways to form a Vermont LLC, and packages are compared on Vermont LLC formation services. Providers that file reports are grouped on agents with compliance tools; agent-only prices across the country are on cheapest registered agent services.

Vermont agent for service of process services: common questions

Can my agent's address also be my LLC's designated office in Vermont?

Vermont treats them as two separate entries. The designated office may but need not be a place of its business and may but need not be located in this State, so you can list your own address there even if you live in another state. Whether a provider will let you use its address for the office as well is a question for that provider, since none of the terms we cite cover it.1

Will my agent file the Vermont annual report for me?

Only if you buy report filing, or, with Northwest, unless you opt out of it. Tailor Brands' Essential plan lists annual compliance (report filing and updates), ZenBusiness sells Annual Report Filing $100 per report, and InCorp charges $89 + state fees. Northwest's terms describe RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay. The state's $45 fee applies whoever files.2, 8, 9, 32, 42

How much does it cost to switch agents in Vermont?

The state charges $35 for the Statement of Change. The old provider's terms can cost more, such as Harbor Compliance's notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term. File the change before you cancel; how to cancel an agent for service of process covers the order.2, 45

What happens if my agent resigns in Vermont?

The agent files a statement of resignation and delivers a copy to the LLC. The agency ends 30 days after the Secretary files it, or earlier when a new agent's designation takes effect. Filing a Statement of Change that names a replacement before then avoids a gap. The Vermont agent guide covers the rest of the process.1, 2

Can I use the agent's address on my website or letterhead?

Some providers forbid it. Tailor Brands' terms say the address cannot be used as the business location in public materials, and LegalZoom's say "You may not list the Registered Address in your company's public media." The agent's address appears in the agent field for every provider; a separate business address is a different product. What an agent can and can't keep off the record explains what stays public.6, 12

How is this list ordered?

By our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. Half the score comes from each provider's Trustpilot rating, which reviews the whole company rather than its Vermont work, and the rest from published facts on services and cost. The method is on how we score, and you can set two providers side by side on our comparison page.
