Best registered agent services in Iowa

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

All 10 services on this page sell registered agent service, and most of them state coverage of every state; the two that don't are noted in their paragraphs. Iowa's statute, Iowa Code § 489.115, says the agent "must have a place of business in this state", and the Certificate of Organization gives the agent's "street and mailing addresses in this state". The Iowa detail that shapes the choice is the biennial report: it is due by April 1 in odd-numbered years, so compliance features have a real filing to handle here, though only every other spring. Iowa's fee schedule lists a change of agent for an LLC as "No fee", which makes renewal price and exit terms the main points of comparison.1, 2

How is this list ordered, and what did we compare?

Providers are listed by our score, highest first, with ties placed in editorial order, and each one is described from the same set of published facts about price, renewal, documents, cancellation and refunds.

Our score uses only cited facts: the Trustpilot rating, breadth of services and dashboard, and value and cost. The full method is on how we score. We compare published terms and don't test services. Trustpilot ratings appear beside our score as a separate number with their own citation.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

For each provider we checked the agent's first-year price and renewal, how documents reach you, what it says about using its address, whether it sells a filing service for the biennial report, and how cancellation and refunds work. When a provider is silent on a point, the paragraph says it doesn't publish that point. The basics of the role are in what a registered agent does; this page is only about hiring one for an Iowa LLC.

Which Iowa rules change how you compare agent services?

The agent needs an Iowa place of business with Iowa street and mailing addresses, a biennial report falls due in odd years, and a change of agent carries no state fee for an LLC.

An Iowa place of business, with both addresses in the state. Under Iowa Code § 489.115, the agent "must have a place of business in this state". A later section of the same chapter adds that the Certificate of Organization lists the agent's "street and mailing addresses in this state", so a mailing address alone doesn't fill the agent field; a street address is needed as well. Any national service that covers Iowa supplies these addresses. Its address goes in the agent field and nowhere else; that is the same for every agent. Naming an agent also has a legal meaning in Iowa: the designation is an affirmation of fact by the limited liability company that the agent has consented to serve, so the service needs to be in place before the filing. Who may serve, and the rules for serving yourself, are on the Iowa registered agent guide.1

A report every other year. Iowa LLCs file a biennial report on this schedule: Every two years (odd-numbered years), due by April 1. The state fee is $30 online or $45 by paper. Several providers below sell a service that files reports for you, and every published price for one is higher than the state's online fee. Whether that is worth paying depends on how much you trust your own calendar. The report and what follows a missed one are covered on staying compliant in Iowa.2

Leaving a provider costs nothing at the state. The fee schedule lists the Statement of Change that names a new agent, for an LLC, as "No fee". So the cost of switching sits almost entirely in the old provider's terms: a notice period, an auto-renewal you forgot, or a refund window that has closed. The order of steps is in how to change a registered agent.2

For providers that file annual or biennial reports as part of a plan, see agents with compliance tools.

How do registered agent services compare for an Iowa LLC?

Each provider's terms follow under its own name, in the same order as the table above.

Tailor Brands

The agent service is $199/year, and renewal is listed as $199/year (renews at the same price); Tailor Brands supplied both prices directly. Coverage is stated as "All 50 states", and the service lists documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. One rule in its terms limits how the address can be used: "Agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials." The terms also describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services, and fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, with a $29 service fee deducted from any refund issued. For Iowa the formation side is relevant too, because its Essential package ($199/yr plus state fees) includes annual compliance (report filing and updates); the plan description doesn't name Iowa's biennial report or say how a yearly plan treats a report due every other year. Read the Tailor Brands review.3, 4, 5, 6, 7

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness sells the agent at $199/year and renews it at $199/yr. New LLCs formed through it get 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. Scans go to its dashboard, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied. Cancelling is done by contacting customer support by phone, and its terms allow a refund only if the service has not yet been used. For report filing on its own, ZenBusiness lists Annual Report Filing $100 per report, charged per report rather than as a subscription. See the ZenBusiness review.8, 9, 10

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). On renewal, its terms say: "Renews at the purchase rate each year; rate subject to change." Its listing reads "Legal documents scanned and uploaded", and other mail is uploaded to account and emailed. You can cancel by phone or online via My Account, though proof of new RA may be required, so file Iowa's change statement before you call. Its report filing service is $99 + state filing fees, bills once. LegalZoom doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. More in the LegalZoom review.11, 12, 13

Bizee

Bizee's agent price is $149/year, and renewal is $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Its agent page adds this offer: "Free first year with any Bizee formation package". Lawsuit papers are mailed via FedEx with tracking. It also advertises "Free lifetime compliance notifications", though Bizee doesn't publish a price for filing a report itself. Cancellation works by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, and orders are generally refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity. See the Bizee review.14, 15, 16, 17

Swyft Filings

Swyft lists agent service at $149 per quarter ($596/year). That quarterly billing makes it one of the costlier agents here over a full year, and its FAQ separately says the service renews annually with reminders before renewal, so check the schedule before paying. Its timing for lawsuit papers is legal SOP typically within 2-3 hours. Its terms set this condition for leaving: "replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation". Its report service, ComplianceGuard $199/year, bills yearly even though Iowa's report comes every other year. The Swyft Filings review has the rest.18, 19, 20, 21

doola

doola's agent page shows $297 per year, and the agent is listed as "RA free with Formation Service". It offers same-day scans; on physical forwarding it says "Not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan". Its terms say recurring fees auto-renew. To leave, doola gives this route: Delete account any time, or email help@doola.com. In Iowa the change statement comes first, so the LLC is never without an agent. doola doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.22, 23

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year and lists coverage of "All 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico". Legal papers are uploaded to your account, and it lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. One term deserves attention in a biennial-report state: "RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay". Its report filing is $100 + state fees, charged at filing. Ask how that enrolment works if you'd rather file Iowa's report yourself. Its cancellation term reads "Cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee", and purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. Read the Northwest review.24, 25, 26, 27, 28

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. The membership is billed separately, Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year, so add it to the agent price. Documents are scanned and uploaded to email and account. The agent renews for successive 1-year terms; cancellation is allowed "Any time by phone, before renewal date", and refund requests must come within 30 days of purchase. The report filing is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees. See the Rocket Lawyer review.29, 30, 31, 32

InCorp Services

InCorp's agent is $129/year, described as a $129 per year flat rate, while its terms say the service is billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met. Legal documents are scanned and delivered same day. The cancellation conditions are to dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees; in Iowa, the Statement of Change that appoints a new agent is listed as "No fee" for an LLC. Refund requests must be made within 60 days of issuance of services. Its report filing is $89 + state fees. See the InCorp review.2, 33, 34, 35, 36

Harbor Compliance

Harbor charges $99 first year (new customers), and renewal is $159 annually. It advertises "Same-day document scanning". Non-renewal notice is due at least 90 days before the end of the current term, which counts for more than the state's side, where the change is listed as "No fee" for an LLC. On refunds, its terms say: No refunds; fees non-refundable. Its managed report service is $199 per state per year plus filing fees, priced per year for a filing Iowa asks for every other year. More in the Harbor Compliance review.2, 37, 38, 39

What does a registered agent cost for an Iowa LLC in the first year and after?

The first year is the $50 state fee for the Certificate of Organization plus the agent's first-year price. None of the Iowa facts we cite include a newspaper publication step, so none is added here.2

After that the agent's renewal is the main recurring cost, plus the biennial report fee ($30 online) in each odd-numbered year. The state's fee page doesn't say in which odd year a new LLC files first, so check with the Secretary of State.2

The agent fee repeats every year while the report fee lands every other year, so the yearly agent price outweighs the report fee for every provider listed.

A paid report service is a separate line from the agent. If you plan to file the biennial report yourself online, the state's fee is $30 online. The full formation arithmetic is on the cheapest ways to form an LLC in Iowa, and formation packages are compared on Iowa LLC formation services compared. National agent prices are on cheapest registered agent services, and you can set two providers next to each other on our comparison page.2

Iowa registered agent services: common questions

Does an Iowa registered agent need an address in Iowa?

Yes. Under Iowa Code § 489.115, the agent "must have a place of business in this state", and the Certificate of Organization lists the agent's "street and mailing addresses in this state". Every national service that covers Iowa provides those addresses as part of the agent fee.1

What does it cost to switch registered agents in Iowa?

For an LLC, the state's fee schedule lists the Statement of Change as "No fee". Any cost comes from the old provider, such as Harbor Compliance's notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term or a refund window that has passed. File the change before cancelling; how to cancel a registered agent covers the order.2, 38

Should I pay an agent service to file Iowa's biennial report?

It depends on whether you will remember the odd-year April deadline. The state fee is $30 online, and filing services from the providers here cost more than that, for example ZenBusiness lists "Annual Report Filing $100 per report" and InCorp lists $89 + state fees. Reminders alone, which several providers include, may be enough; see annual reports explained.2, 8, 36

Can I use my registered agent's address as my Iowa business address?

Check the provider's terms first. Tailor Brands says "Agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials." The agent's address goes in the agent field on every filing, whoever the agent is. For another address, some providers sell a separate product, such as Bizee's virtual address ($29/month; 1 month free with Bizee LLC formation); what stays on the public record explains the rest.5, 40

What happens if my Iowa LLC's agent service lapses?

Most services here renew automatically, so a lapse tends to follow a failed payment, a cancellation or a resignation. If the LLC loses good standing and is dissolved, Iowa's reinstatement application costs $5. The Iowa registered agent guide explains resignation and replacement.2

How is this list ordered?

By our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. The score uses only published facts, and the largest part comes from each provider's Trustpilot rating; how we score shows each breakdown. Trustpilot reviews cover each company as a whole, not its Iowa service, so the terms in each paragraph are what to compare.
