Best LLC formation services in Iowa

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

An Iowa LLC is formed by filing a Certificate of Organization with the Iowa Secretary of State for $50, with the options listed as "Online (Fast Track Filing) or paper filing", and naming a registered agent with an Iowa place of business under Iowa Code § 489.115. None of the Iowa facts we cite include a newspaper publication step. The state doesn't publish a standard processing time, but it sells speed, with paid tiers that run from "5 business days $15" to "one hour $200". A formation service files the same certificate for you and adds its own fee; its packages differ mainly in whether they include the agent, an EIN, an operating agreement and help with the biennial report.1, 2

How do you form an LLC in Iowa, step by step?

You choose a name, line up a registered agent with Iowa addresses, file the Certificate of Organization, pick a speed, then get an EIN, sign an operating agreement and diary the biennial report.

The order is deliberate. Under Iowa Code § 489.115, naming an agent is an affirmation that the agent has agreed to serve, so the agent comes before the filing.3

  1. Pick a name and check it. Search the Secretary of State's records for a conflict before filing. If you need to hold a name while something else is settled, a reservation costs $10. The fee page we cite gives no length for it, so ask the office how long it lasts.1
  2. Line up the registered agent. The agent "must have a place of business in this state" (Iowa Code § 489.115), and the certificate asks for the agent's "street and mailing addresses in this state". The statute's test is that place of business, so an owner who has one in Iowa can be named; otherwise a commercial agent fills the field. The details are set out on the Iowa registered agent guide.3
  3. Complete the certificate. The document is the Certificate of Organization. A service drafts it from your order; filing yourself, you enter the details directly.
  4. Choose how to file. Iowa lists its options as "Online (Fast Track Filing) or paper filing". Fast Track Filing is the online route.1
  5. Decide on speed. Faster handling is a surcharge on top of the filing fee. The paid tiers are listed as "5 business days $15", "2 business days $50", "same business day $125" and "one hour $200". The office notes the surcharge is per document and nonrefundable, and takes requests in person or via Fast Track Filing upload.2
  6. Get an EIN from the IRS. The Employer Identification Number is the LLC's federal tax ID; banks and payroll providers ask for it. Some packages below file for it; others sell it as an add-on.
  7. Sign an operating agreement. It is a private contract between the members, separate from the certificate, and it sets ownership shares, voting and what happens when a member leaves. Some packages supply a template.
  8. Put the biennial report in your calendar. Iowa LLCs report in odd-numbered years, due by April 1, for $30 online. Staying compliant in Iowa has the full schedule.1

Out-of-state LLCs don't form here; they register as foreign LLCs for $100, and Iowa Code § 489.115 applies the same place-of-business rule to their agent.1, 3

What does an Iowa LLC cost with and without a service?

The Secretary of State's fees don't change with the route you take. Every package price below is charged on top of them.

Iowa Secretary of State fees for LLCs
FilingFee
Form the LLC$50 sos.iowa.gov
Reserve a name$10 sos.iowa.gov
Expedited processingSurcharge per document on top of the filing fee: 5 business days $15; 2 business days $50; same business day $125; one hour $200 sos.iowa.gov

Recurring report$30 online, $45 by paper sos.iowa.gov
Reinstatement after dissolution$5 sos.iowa.gov

If you add the cheapest paid speed, the state total is the $50 filing fee plus the "5 business days $15" surcharge; the fastest tier, "one hour $200", replaces it at a higher price. "Not listed" means the package description we cite doesn't mention the item, so ask the provider. First-year and second-year totals, with agent renewals, are worked out on the cheapest ways to form an Iowa LLC.

What does each provider's formation package include for an Iowa LLC?

These paragraphs cover only published package terms, in the same score order as the tables above; Trustpilot ratings are shown in the provider table, not here.

Most of the provider facts we cite don't say whether fast handling pays Iowa's speed surcharge, so if a package promises fast handling, ask whether the state's fee is part of the price. InCorp is an exception; its entry reads "$50.00 InCorp expedite fee (state expedite fee extra)". The agent services themselves are compared on registered agents for Iowa LLCs.27

Tailor Brands

Lite is $0 plus state fees, with processing listed as "Lite: within 14 business days", and its description notes no annual compliance, operating agreement or branding tools. Essential costs $199/yr plus state fees, with processing listed as "Essential/Elite: within 1 business day". Its feature list adds annual compliance (report filing and updates), operating agreement. The listing doesn't name Iowa's biennial report or say how a yearly plan treats the years when nothing is due.4

None of the three packages says a registered agent is included; Tailor Brands sells the agent separately at $199/year. On the EIN, its listing reads "EIN filing service offered; price not published". Essential and Elite ($249/yr plus state fees) are yearly charges.4, 5, 6

ZenBusiness

Starter is $0 + state fees (does not renew), with processing listed as "Starter: 7-10 days", and ZenBusiness says its timing excludes Secretary of State time, so Iowa's own queue comes on top. Starter includes Worry-Free Compliance free for 1 year (then $199/yr); in a biennial state, check whether that free year spans an odd-year April. The EIN and operating agreement are +$99 add-ons. On every tier the agent is listed as "Not included; add-on +$199/yr", and ZenBusiness separately offers 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. A faster Starter costs extra (Rush upgrade +$79 on Starter), while Pro ($199 + state fees, renews at $199/yr) includes ongoing filing compliance (state-required annual report filings and up to 2 amendments per year), along with the EIN and an operating agreement template.7, 28

LegalZoom

The lowest LegalZoom package is $0 + state filing fees and covers the Articles of organization; the EIN, operating agreement and agent are priced separately. The EIN is $79, the operating agreement is listed as "Starts at $99", and the agent is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). Its middle package, $249 + state filing fees, adds attorney calls on these terms: 30 days included, then $49/month auto-renew.9, 10, 11, 12

Bizee

Basic is $0 + state fee and lists Registered Agent (1st year included); after that the agent renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee). The EIN ($70) and operating agreement (+$99) are add-ons on Basic. Standard ($199 + state fee) includes both, plus faster processing (~2 weeks). Bizee describes that timing as one that includes expedited filing, but doesn't say which of Iowa's paid tiers, if any, it buys.13, 14, 29

Swyft Filings

Swyft's Basic is $0 + state fees and processes in 7-10 business days. Standard, at $169 + state fees (promotional, 'SAVE $30'; regular $199), adds custom organizational minutes, custom banking resolution, business banking essentials, operating agreement and processes in 3 business days. No package lists a registered agent; the agent is $149 per quarter ($596/year). Every plan includes a trial of Swyft's report service, "ComplianceGuard $199/year", on these terms: "14-day free trial then auto-charged". For an LLC whose report is due only in odd years, a yearly subscription may bill through a year with nothing to file.15, 30, 31

doola

Starter is $297/yr and includes LLC filing, EIN, US bank account guidance, US business address, registered agent. doola gives its own filing time as "1-2 business days filing", after which Iowa's queue applies. doola says it can help founders who include "a non-resident without a US SSN"; see agent services for non-resident founders.16, 17, 32

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest's package is $39 + State Fees and adds a free domain name, open source website, phone line, business email, business address, brand protection. Its corporation page counts a year of agent service in that price, but the LLC page doesn't say so, which is worth confirming before you order. Bought alone, the agent is $125 per year. The operating agreement is listed as a "Free template", and the EIN costs $50 (with SSN); $200 without SSN.18, 20, 21, 33

Rocket Lawyer

Formation comes through a membership: First registration free with a Rocket Lawyer membership. The memberships are charged yearly, with Standard at $149/year, Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year, and the free registration needs one of them. The agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, so Standard members can't add it. The EIN is $70 with Plus or Pro membership, and the formation listing names no operating agreement.22, 23, 34, 35

InCorp

InCorp prices formation "starting at $99 plus state fees", and its listing notes "Live chat and phone support included". The agent is not part of it; InCorp lists it as sold separately at $129 per state per year. Its expedite charge is the $50.00 InCorp expedite fee, with any Iowa surcharge billed on top of that. No EIN or operating agreement is itemized in the formation listing, though InCorp sells an EIN service, $69 (InCorp prepares the IRS forms or obtains the number for you).24, 25, 27, 36

Harbor Compliance

Harbor prices formation "Starting at $99 plus state fees", and its page lists "Name check, articles, registered agent, EIN, operating agreement", without saying which tier includes which item. Harbor says most LLCs are prepared and filed in one business day. Expedited state processing is available in most states, and Harbor doesn't publish its price. The agent alone is $99 first year (new customers), renewing at $159 annually.26, 37, 38

Should you file Iowa's Certificate of Organization yourself or use a service?

Filing yourself costs $50 plus any speed surcharge you choose, and Iowa's process is short: a single certificate, which can be filed online. A service saves you the form work and can act as agent.1

The agent deserves more thought than the paperwork. Under Iowa Code § 489.115, the agent needs an Iowa place of business, so if no owner has one, someone else has to fill that field; Bizee, for example, offers a "Free first year with any Bizee formation package". An owner who has an Iowa place of business can serve and skip the fee, but that owner's Iowa address goes in the agent field.3, 39

Speed is easy to misread. A provider's own handling time is separate from the state's. Iowa's paid tiers are what shorten the state's part, and the office notes the surcharge is per document and nonrefundable, whoever files.2

Then there is the biennial report. Packages that include annual compliance, or a paid filing service, put the odd-year report on someone else's desk; in Iowa that report costs $30 online if you file it yourself. A service's business address product is a separate purchase from its agent address; Swyft Filings, for example, lists one at $29/mo. For an LLC with several owners or outside money, a lawyer-drafted operating agreement may suit better than a template. The glossary defines the filing terms, and annual reports explained covers report schedules in other states.1, 15

Questions about forming an LLC in Iowa

How long does Iowa take to approve an LLC?

The state doesn't publish a standard processing time for a Certificate of Organization. It does sell paid speed tiers, listed as "5 business days $15", "2 business days $50", "same business day $125" and "one hour $200", each added per document. A service's own handling time comes before the state's.2

Can I file an Iowa Certificate of Organization online?

Yes. Iowa lists its filing options as "Online (Fast Track Filing) or paper filing", so the online route is Fast Track Filing. Speed requests can be made through it or in person, and the office notes the surcharge is per document and nonrefundable.1, 2

Does Iowa require LLC publication?

None of the Iowa facts we cite include a publication requirement, and the Secretary of State can confirm whether one applies. The steps are the certificate, the agent and the fee, with the biennial report afterwards. Owners comparing nearby states can check Illinois or Minnesota.

Do Iowa formation packages include a registered agent?

Some do. Bizee's lowest package lists the agent as "Yes, first year", while ZenBusiness lists it as "Not included; add-on +$199/yr". Compare the renewal price too; registered agents for Iowa LLCs lists each one.7, 13

Is a compliance package worth it for an Iowa LLC?

Only if you want someone else to file the biennial report. It is due by April 1 in odd-numbered years and costs $30 online. Some yearly compliance plans bill in even years too, so compare the plan's price with filing yourself; staying compliant in Iowa has the dates.1
