Best resident agent services in Massachusetts

Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

The 10 services on this page each publish a price for registered agent service, which Massachusetts law calls a resident agent. Most list coverage of every state; LegalZoom and doola don't publish their state coverage on the pages we cite. Under Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 156C, § 5, the agent must be an individual resident of the commonwealth, a domestic corporation, or a foreign corporation authorized to do business in the commonwealth. What sets Massachusetts apart is the yearly bill around the agent: every LLC files an annual report costing $500, and that report contains the same information as the Certificate of Organization, updated for any changes, the agent included. So the useful comparison here is renewal price, what each provider charges to file that report, and how cheaply you can leave.1, 2, 3

Massachusetts law uses the term resident agent. Most states call the same role a registered agent. What the term means in Massachusetts

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

Our score uses only published, cited facts: each provider's Trustpilot rating, the breadth of its services and dashboard, and its value and cost across the first and second year. The full method and every breakdown are on how we score. We compare published terms; we don't buy or test the services.

For Massachusetts we lined up the same facts for every provider. They are the agent price and its renewal, how legal papers reach you, whether an annual report filing service is sold and at what price, how renewal and cancellation work, and the refund window. Where a provider doesn't publish one of these, the paragraph says so. If you want the background on what the agent does day to day, read what a resident agent does first.

Which Massachusetts rules shape the choice?

Three rules do most of the work. The statute limits who may be the agent, the LLC also keeps a separate records office, and a yearly report re-states the agent every year.

Who may be named. The statute allows three kinds of agent: a person who lives in Massachusetts, a Massachusetts corporation, or an out-of-state corporation authorized to do business here (Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 156C, § 5). A national service that covers Massachusetts names one of its own companies in the agent field. The list in the statute names individuals and corporations, so it is fair to ask a provider which entity will appear on your certificate. If the answer leaves you unsure, the Corporations Division can say whether that entity qualifies. The full rules on who may serve are in our Massachusetts resident agent guide.1

The records office is a separate line. Besides the agent, a Massachusetts LLC lists an office in the commonwealth where records are kept. Hiring a resident agent fills the agent field only. It doesn't by itself give you that records office. Some providers sell a business address product on the side, and whether one of those can be listed as the records office is a question for the Division, not something any provider fact we cite answers.1

The annual report names the agent again. The report is due by the anniversary date of the filing of the original certificate of organization each year, and it contains the same information as the Certificate of Organization, updated for any changes. The fee is $500 every year. Most services sell a report filing add-on, so its price belongs next to the agent price when you compare, and the paragraphs below list each one we found. If a report is missed, there is no late fee listed for LLCs, but failing to file for 2 consecutive years is grounds for administrative dissolution. The staying compliant page for Massachusetts covers the report itself.2, 3, 4

Leaving is cheap if you file online. The Statement of Change of Resident Agent/Resident Office costs $25 by paper or fax and $0 if filed electronically. With a state cost that low, a provider's notice period or closed refund window can cost more than the change. If an agent resigns instead, it files with the Division and gives the LLC a copy; the appointment ends on the 31st day after filing.3, 5, 6

How do the resident agent services compare for a Massachusetts LLC?

Each provider below follows the order of the table above. For every one we note what it charges to file the Massachusetts annual report, since that filing comes round every year.

Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands charges $199/year for the agent and lists renewal as $199/year (renews at the same price); both prices are supplied by the provider. Incoming papers are handled as documents scanned and uploaded to the business dashboard. Its explanatory copy says the agent can file the annual report if instructed, and its package priced at $199/yr plus state fees lists annual compliance (report filing and updates), which in Massachusetts means a report every year. One limit in its terms is worth reading before you sign up: the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. For a business address it sells a separate Virtual Address product, with the price unpublished. Its terms describe auto-renewal on by default for subscription services. Fees are non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, and any refund it does issue carries a $29 service fee. More in the Tailor Brands review.7, 8, 9, 10, 11

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness lists its agent at $199/year, renewing at $199/yr, with 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC. It scans papers to its dashboard and lists mail and overnight delivery for urgent notices. For the report, its price list shows Annual Report Filing $100 per report, plus a broader plan, Worry-Free Compliance $199/year. The state's $500 is owed whoever files. Cancelling works by contacting customer support by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. See the ZenBusiness review.12, 13, 14

LegalZoom

LegalZoom's price is $249/year (first-time registered agent customers). After that, the service renews at the purchase rate each year, with the rate subject to change. It lists email reminders about annual report deadlines via Compliance Calendar. It sells each annual report filing once, at $99 + state filing fees, so a Massachusetts owner using it would buy it again every year; its Compliance Filings subscription offers auto-filing of annual reports, starts at $199/year, auto-renews. Leaving can involve paperwork first, because proof of new RA may be required. With the online change free in Massachusetts, that proof costs nothing in state fees. Read the LegalZoom review.15, 16, 17, 18

Bizee

Bizee charges $149/year and renews at $149/year (ongoing annual fee), and the agent comes as a free first year with any Bizee formation package. Service of process is mailed via FedEx with tracking. It advertises lifetime compliance notifications, and it does sell annual report filing, with no standalone price stated. Its cancellation route is assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change, so the Massachusetts statement of change goes in first. Details are in the Bizee review.19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills its agent at $149 per quarter ($596/year), so the yearly figure to compare is $596/year. It uploads documents to the customer's account and says served legal papers arrive typically within 2 to 3 hours. Its report service, ComplianceGuard $199/year, files the report each year with the state fee extra. Its terms say a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation, and refunds are case by case with no published time window. See the Swyft Filings review.24, 25, 26, 27

doola

doola lists $297 per year, the same number as its Starter plan ($297/yr), and doesn't make clear whether that buys the agent on its own. The agent is listed as RA free with Formation Service. It offers same-day scans, while paper forwarding is not included in base RA subscription unless stated in plan. It lists annual report notifications, but Starter does not include ongoing compliance filings; its pricing shows Annual State Report Filing included in the Tax and Compliance plan, at $1,999/yr. Its terms say recurring fees auto-renew. doola doesn't publish its state coverage on the pages we checked. See the doola review.28, 29, 30, 31

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest charges $125 per year, and its coverage list reads All 50 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. It lists normal business mail scanned up to 5 docs per year free. One term weighs more in Massachusetts than in states without a yearly report. Northwest's terms say RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay, and that report service costs $100 + state fees, charged at filing. If you want to file the report yourself, check that enrolment. You can cancel anytime through the online account with no cancellation fee, and purchases are non-refundable after 90 days. Northwest also sells Mail Forwarding $20/month (24 select states); the pages we cite don't say whether Massachusetts is one of those states. See the Northwest review.32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, and that membership is its own yearly charge: Plus at $249/year or Pro at $349/year. Its annual report service is $100 with Pro membership, excluding state fees, so a Massachusetts owner who wants the report filed would need Pro. You can cancel any time by phone, before renewal date, and refund requests must come within 30 days of purchase. See the Rocket Lawyer review.38, 39, 40, 41

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year and calls it a $129 per year flat rate, though its terms say the service is billed at then-current fee unless a cancellation condition is met. It sends email reminders before deadlines and sells annual report filing at $89 + state fees. To stop paying, one condition must be met before the fee is due: dissolve entity, appoint new agent, or resign InCorp with fees. Refunds must be requested within 60 days of issuance of services. Read the InCorp review.42, 43, 44, 45

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance offers a discounted first year at $99 for new customers (regular $159), then renews at $159 annually. Its annual report service is $199 per state per year plus filing fees, and it gives no refunds. Its terms renew the agent unless you give notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, so a Massachusetts owner switching agents needs to count back from the renewal date. See the Harbor Compliance review.46, 47, 48

What does a resident agent cost in Massachusetts in year one and later?

In year one you pay the $500 certificate fee, plus a service charge of $20 on a $500 filing if you file online or by fax, plus the agent's first-year price.2, 49

From year two, the agent's renewal sits next to the $500 annual report, and adding a provider's filing service raises it further.2

A few gaps between the first year and the second stand out in Massachusetts.

Owners who plan to keep the LLC for years should read the renewal column and the report-filing price together. Agent prices nationwide are on cheapest registered agent services, and two providers can be set side by side on the comparison page.

Massachusetts resident agent services: common questions

Does a commercial resident agent file my Massachusetts annual report?

Not automatically, with one exception to watch. Most providers sell report filing separately, such as Annual Report Filing $100 per report at ZenBusiness or $89 + state fees at InCorp, and the state's $500 is owed whoever files. The exception is Northwest, whose terms say RA customers auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay. The report itself is explained in annual reports explained.2, 12, 34, 45

How much does it cost to switch resident agents in Massachusetts?

Filed online, the statement of change costs nothing, and on paper or by fax it costs $25. The larger cost can come from the old provider: Harbor Compliance needs notice at least 90 days before the end of the current term, and Swyft Filings' terms say a replacement agent must be designated (or business dissolved) before cancellation. The steps are in how to change a resident agent.3, 26, 48

Can any national registered agent company be my Massachusetts resident agent?

The statute says the agent must be an individual resident of the commonwealth, a domestic corporation, or a foreign corporation authorized to do business in the commonwealth. Ask the provider which of its companies will be named on your certificate. The Corporations Division can confirm whether a particular entity qualifies, and the Massachusetts resident agent guide covers the rule in more depth.1

What happens if my resident agent resigns?

The agent files a resignation with the Division and gives the LLC a copy, and the appointment ends on the 31st day after filing. Naming a replacement on the statement of change is free if you file it online. Before you stop paying a service, read how to cancel a resident agent.6

Can the resident agent's address be my Massachusetts business address?

That depends on the provider's terms, and some say no. Tailor Brands' terms say the agent address cannot be used as the business location in public materials. The agent's address fills the agent field only; the records office and other addresses on the certificate are separate entries. Our page on what an agent can keep off the record explains what stays public.10

How is this list ordered?

By our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. Trustpilot ratings describe each company as a whole rather than its Massachusetts service, so compare the renewal and report-filing prices above for your own LLC. Providers with filing features are grouped on agents with compliance tools.
