Best registered agent services in North Carolina

Facts checked October 13 to 14, 2026.

Every one of the 10 services on this page sells registered agent service that a North Carolina LLC can name, as long as the agent keeps a business office at the LLC's registered office inside the state (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 55D-30). Because North Carolina LLCs file an annual report every year, due April 15 each year, starting the year after formation, the useful comparison here goes past the agent price. Look at what each service renews at, how it handles the yearly report, and how you leave it, since switching costs only $5 at the state.1, 2, 3

How did we order these services, and what did we look at?

Services are listed by our score, highest first; where two scores tie, the order is editorial. For each one we read the same published facts on price, renewal, document handling, cancellation and refunds.

Our score uses only published, cited facts, weighted toward customer satisfaction, then breadth of service and dashboard, then value and cost. Each provider's breakdown is on how we score. We compare what providers publish and don't buy or test the services. The Trustpilot rating beside each score is a separate third-party figure, cited to Trustpilot and left as published.

"Score" is our editorial score out of 10, built from published facts: half from the Trustpilot rating, the rest from breadth of services, dashboard and mail scanning, and package value and two-year cost (how we score; scores approved 2026-10-14). We don't test services. Trustpilot ratings are third-party, cited to Trustpilot, and not adjusted.

The same questions were put to each provider's own pages: the yearly price and the renewal, how lawsuit papers and state mail reach the owner, whether the provider will file the North Carolina annual report and for how much, how the service renews and ends, and when money comes back. Gaps are named as gaps. Readers new to the role can start with what a registered agent does; everything below assumes you are picking a paid service for a North Carolina LLC.

Which North Carolina rules should shape your choice?

Three rules shape it here: the agent's office has to be your registered office in the state, the annual report repeats your agent details every spring, and changes must be reported within a set window.

The agent's office and your registered office are the same place. Under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 55D-30, an individual agent must be someone who resides in this State and whose business office is identical with the registered office. In practice a commercial service gives you its North Carolina address, and that address becomes both the agent's office and the LLC's registered office on the public record. That is how every commercial agent works here; no single provider is special for it. Who else can serve, and whether you can act for your own LLC, are covered in the North Carolina registered agent guide.1

The annual report lists your agent again. Each report lists the LLC's registered agent and office, plus the names/titles/addresses of principal company officials. So the agent you choose shows up again on a filing due April 15 each year, starting the year after formation, at $200 by paper or $203 online. A provider that files or reminds you about that report is doing something useful in this state, which is why its annual report terms appear in the paragraphs below. The full report process is on staying compliant in North Carolina.2, 4

Changes have a deadline. The state treats it as grounds for administrative dissolution when an LLC is without a registered agent or office for 60+ days, or fails to report an agent change or resignation within 60 days. When a commercial agent resigns, the appointment ends on the 31st day after filing. That gives you a fixed period to line up a replacement, so a provider's notice and cancellation rules deserve a careful read before you sign up.5, 6

Leaving is cheap at the state level. The Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent (Form BE-06) costs $5. Next to that fee, a provider's notice period or a closed refund window can easily cost more than the filing. The order of steps is in how to change a registered agent.3, 7

How do the registered agent services compare for North Carolina?

The paragraphs run in table order. Each sticks to what that company publishes, and each notes what the provider offers for the report a North Carolina LLC files every spring.

Tailor Brands

The provider supplied its agent price, $199/year, and says it renews at $199/year (renews at the same price); neither figure appears on a public page yet. Papers are scanned to a dashboard that sends new-document notifications. Its terms bar presenting the agent address as your business location in public materials, so in North Carolina it fills the registered office line, not a public business address. Renewal is on by default, its terms call fees non-refundable to the extent the law allows, and any refund that is issued carries a $29 service fee. On the report, its agent page says the agent can file it if instructed, and the Essential plan, $199/yr plus state fees, bundles report filing and updates. More in the Tailor Brands review.8, 9, 10, 11, 12

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness asks the same yearly agent price as Tailor Brands in the table above and renews at $199/yr. LLCs it forms get 50% off the first year ($99). You receive scans; paper originals travel only when they can't be copied. The agent renews automatically, you end it by phone, and a refund is possible only if the service has not yet been used. For the yearly report it sells Annual Report Filing at $100 per report and Worry-Free Compliance at $199/year; the pages we read don't say whether the state's fee is included. See the ZenBusiness review.13, 14, 15

LegalZoom

LegalZoom quotes $249/year (first-time registered agent customers) and renews at the purchase rate, which it says is subject to change. Agent customers get deadline emails through its Compliance Calendar, and a separate filing service costs $99 + state filing fees. The agent terms forbid listing its address in your public media. Cancelling may require proof of new RA, which in this state means your Form BE-06 should already be on file. Its state coverage isn't stated on the pages we checked. See the LegalZoom review.7, 16, 17, 18

Bizee

Bizee sells the agent alone for $149/year and gives the first year free with any Bizee formation package; after that, $149/year (ongoing annual fee). Bizee mails service of process via FedEx with tracking and promises free lifetime compliance notifications. It also says it handles annual report filings, but shows no standalone price for that, so the cost for a North Carolina report isn't published. Leaving takes a new agent on file and notifying Bizee of the change. Its general order terms make orders refundable until payment is forwarded to a government entity, and it publishes no refund rule specific to the agent; packages are covered in the Bizee review.19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings bills $149 per quarter ($596/year), a quarterly charge nobody else here uses. Uploads of lawsuit papers typically land within 2-3 hours. An FAQ says the service renews annually, which doesn't square with quarterly billing; confirm at checkout. Before it will cancel, a replacement agent must be designated. Its report product, ComplianceGuard $199/year, starts with a 14-day free trial and then charges the card on file. Read the Swyft Filings review.24, 25, 26, 27

doola

doola's agent page lists $297 per year, the same figure as its Starter formation plan, so it isn't clear whether that buys the agent alone. The agent is free with Formation Service, without saying for how many years. It offers same-day scans, but posting paper to you isn't part of the base RA subscription. Owners get annual report notifications, useful with an April deadline. Fees auto-renew at whatever rates apply then. Coverage by state isn't published on the pages we read. See the doola review.28, 29

Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest asks $125 per year and lists offices in every state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Beyond legal papers it scans ordinary mail, up to 5 docs per year free, and will post an original for a fee within 30 days of receipt when a scan fails. Its annual report service is $100 + state fees. There is no cancellation fee, but sales are final after 90 days. The terms we read describe auto-pay for some services, but the page does not say RA itself auto-renews, so ask before you buy. The Northwest review goes further.30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer's agent is $125 with a Plus or Pro membership. The membership is billed separately each year, Plus at $249/year and Pro at $349/year, so the true yearly cost is both charges combined. Scans go to your email and account. The agent rolls over in successive 1-year terms; you cancel by phone, and refunds must be asked for within 30 days. The annual report filing service costs $100 with Pro membership, state fee excluded. Read the Rocket Lawyer review.36, 37, 38, 39

InCorp Services

InCorp charges $129/year and markets it as a flat rate, though its terms bill at the 'then current' fee. Papers are scanned the same day they arrive and stored in its Entity Management System (EMS). Report filing costs $89 + state fees. Billing stops only if you dissolve the LLC, name a new agent or pay InCorp to resign, and one of those has to happen before annual fee is due. Refund requests have to come within 60 days. Read the InCorp review.40, 41, 42, 43

Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance starts at $99 first year (new customers) and moves to $159 annually. Agent clients get annual report filing reminders, and Harbor files reports for $199 per state per year plus the state fee. Its exit rule needs a calendar entry: notice of non-renewal is due at least 90 days before the term ends, or a new paid term begins. Fees are non-refundable under its terms. More in the Harbor Compliance review.44, 45, 46

What does a registered agent cost in North Carolina, in year one and later?

In year one you pay the $125 Articles fee and the agent's first-year price. From the next calendar year on, the bill is the agent's renewal plus the annual report fee, $200 by paper or $203 online.2, 3

That report fee is owed whoever your agent is, so it doesn't change which provider is cheaper. It does change what a provider's compliance add-on is worth. A service that files the report for a fee adds that fee on top of the state's.

Some providers price the first year differently from later years: Bizee and doola include the agent with their formation service, ZenBusiness halves it with formation, and Harbor Compliance has a new-customer rate. LegalZoom's listed price is for first-time agent customers. Rocket Lawyer adds a membership, and Swyft Filings bills by the quarter.

If you plan to run the LLC for years, the renewal column tells you more than the first-year one. Formation totals with these agents are worked out in the cheapest ways to form an LLC in North Carolina, and the packages themselves are compared in North Carolina LLC formation services. National agent prices are on cheapest registered agent services, and any two providers can be set side by side on our comparison page.

North Carolina registered agent services: common questions

Can a commercial agent's address be my North Carolina business address?

Not automatically. The agent's address becomes your registered office, but some providers restrict other uses: Tailor Brands' terms rule out using it as your business location in public materials, and LegalZoom's rule out listing it in your company's public media. Other addresses on your filings, such as the principal office, are separate. Our page on what a registered agent can and can't keep off the record explains what stays public.

Do I need my agent service to file the North Carolina annual report?

No. You can file it yourself online or on paper, and it is due April 15 each year, starting the year after formation. The state's fee is $200 by paper or $203 online. A filing service adds its own fee, for example $100 + state fees at Northwest or $89 + state fees at InCorp. Some providers include reminders with the agent, as LegalZoom does with its Compliance Calendar. More on the report in annual reports explained.2, 33, 42

What does it cost to switch registered agents in North Carolina?

The state charges $5 for the Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent (Form BE-06). The larger costs tend to come from the old provider: Harbor Compliance needs notice at least 90 days before a term ends, and Swyft Filings says a replacement agent must be designated. File the change first and cancel second; how to cancel a registered agent walks through it.3, 7, 26, 46

What happens if my registered agent resigns?

The appointment ends on the 31st day after filing, counting from when the agent files its statement of resignation. If the LLC then goes without a registered agent or office for 60+ days, the state can treat that as grounds for administrative dissolution. Name a new agent with the change form before that point, and check that the next annual report shows the new details.5

Which services send reminders for the North Carolina annual report?

Several say they do. LegalZoom sends deadline emails through its Compliance Calendar, Harbor Compliance includes annual report filing reminders, doola sends annual report notifications, and Bizee advertises free lifetime compliance notifications. A reminder doesn't file the report or pay the fee. Under the state's rules, failure to file within 60 days after the due date is grounds for administrative dissolution. For providers built around this, see agents with compliance tools.5, 19, 28, 44

Why is this list in this order?

It follows our score, highest first, with ties in editorial order. The score draws on published, cited facts, the largest part being each provider's Trustpilot rating, and its method is on how we score. Trustpilot rates each company as a whole, not its North Carolina service, so compare the terms above for your own LLC.
